Gears

My friend's dad told me that 3.73s and 4.10s make you more prone to snap axles/blow diffs..is that true? (i'm not the BEST stick driver yet, but i'm not too bad)

The answer is yes if you add traction (slicks) to the vehicle so the axles see more torque. Most people add the gears and than because of street tires have to launch at a lower RPM and will see almost no difference in axle life.

A numerically higher ring/pinion ratio does give the motor more mechanical advantage to place a greater torque load on the axles, but you are going to need some significant power before you will need to upgrade to 31 spline or higher axles. Strap on a pair of slicks and do a 5k clutch dump and all bets are off, but on street tires it will be highly unlikely that you will break an axle.
