gears!

They are notorious for whining. Most people recommend the FRPP gears that are not made by motive. I believe this is denoted by an A after the part number as compared to an M at the end of the Motive produced ones.

ok but is there any other problem with them? thanks in advance!

some claim the gears themself cause the whine, no matter how they are set up. if it worries you, get the FRPP gears.

4.30 FRPP gears are made by motive, not ford. 4.10s are made by both, depending on the part numbers, as mentioned above. 410A gears are ford made, 410M gears are motive. not sure about other ratios.

is there a good reason for me not to buy motive gears?

I have Yukon gears in mine and they don't make a sound. I highly recommend when chaning gears to go with a new master bearing kit the same brand as the gears you buy. I got the yukon matching cross pin for 3.73 gears as well. Break-in is important as well for the first 100 miles. First day, put 20 miles on it and then park it. Don't forget friction modifier and I recommend PAO stock base synthetic gear oil. Personally, I'd stay away from motive. Change the oil after first 500 miles.

I won't talk about brands regarding oils because it would open up a whole new can of worms. All I can say is do your home work when it comes to PAO base stock synthetics. One company that I won't mention use to be PAO based and then switched to save money.

Next day put some more easy free way miles on it, park it. No burn outs until after approx 100 miles. Installation quality will make a big difference. Shop around for prices. Shops may vary $250 to $600. The guy charging more than 300 is trying to get the best of you.
Done right, just like a quality torque converter, will put a huge grin on your face. Done wrong and you and your wallet will hate it.

I've had motive's in my Gbody and never had a problem with them being noisy or otherwise (only when I side-stepped the clutch lol). I've only heard of the 3.90 ratio being noisy of any brand of gears. my .02
