well im trying to get my 302 back in and lined up with my c4 trans. I tried it by myself with no luck at all. should i make it so the engine tips down in the back so it matches the trans angle better? or if anyone has any ideas or tricks of getting the engine back in, trying to get it in tonight but will probably wait until my dad gets back into town monday.

thanks

Ty

I second that, it is a pain in the ass to do by yourself. IF you don't have the tranny attatched to the back it shouldn't be too bad, but if its your first time just wait you could damage some stuff.

jack up the transmission a little bit, so it angles up. then angle the back of the motor down a bit.

That should get the pins to align a little bit more with the bell housing.

Wait for it to clunk together and then let the jack on the trans down a bit and lower the motor.

when In doubt, curse. If that doesnt work, beat it with a hammer. If it stil doesnt work, Light it on fire.

Before you jack up the tranny, you might want to undo the tranny mount.

Take a couple of bolts that are 2-3" long or so and the same thread as the bellhousing bolts and cut the heads off.Thread them into the back of the block loosely and it will help line up the engine and transmission. Before you put the engine in make sure that the torque converter is fully seated and that the orientation of the torque converter studs matches the holes in the flexplate. When you finally get the engine mated with the transmission using the headless bolts, thread in a couple of bellhousing bolts loosely to lock everything together.Check that the torque convereter studs are going through the holes in the flexplate. If they aren't then generally there is still enough clearance that you can spin the motor or flexplate and get them to pop into place.Push the engine against the transmission and tighten the bellhousing bolts while periodically making sure that the torque converter isn't jammed against the flexplate. You should be able to wiggle the torque converter slightly back and forth even when all the bellhousing bolts are snugged down.If you can't wiggle the torque converter then stop as further tightening of the bolts can do damage and it probably means the torque converter isn't seated all the way in.I have installed a lot of engines by myself and the cut off bolt trick helps.Just don't thread them in too far as they can be a pain to get out later.

You have the torque converter on the tranny and not still on the engine's flex plate, don't you?
