Don't fear the auto, its so much more rewarding to slide sideways into second gear when you know your not 'cheating' to do it.

Just raw power and a good strong shifting auto .
Anyone can hold the clutch that extra second and power shift to squeel out into second/third, but when you do it in an auto and its all the cars doing... so worth it.

BTW the overdrive is weak in the 4R70W so like any good mustang owner, turn overdrive off unless your on the highway

Once you learn the 'sweet spots' the auto is a lot more fun, (with stock gears) at 75-80kph (like 45mph?) if you floor it, it'll down shift and be perfectly in the powerband which really snaps the neck and barks the tires.

Another great way to get a female passenger excited, stop, put it in first then drive up to about 30kph (10mph?) let off for half a second and then stomp on it, if you hook up you'll swear the front end lifted off the ground, NASTY acceleration doing it that way, but make sure you shift into second at around 4500rpm, it takes an extra half second to shift in an auto so you want to shift a fairways before redline to avoid bouncing.

But yeah, I still recommend leaving it in D 99% of the time.
Oh and DO NOT, EVER, neutral drop these cars. They have enough power they don't need it, and even the stock torque converter lets the rpms climb enough to really spin out. That and all the damage a neutral drop does, its totally not worth it.

Some very good points above , only time for O/D is above 45-50mph , the O/D gear is really a band , much weaker , so get your stang up to speed using the first 3 gears , and you shouldnt shift into O/D maually at AOT around which is about 128 MPH , band for you O/D band !

On the shifting side, when I was stock I always got my best track times maually shifting around 5800RPMs , this will make the slow shifting computer shift at the 6200rpm redline , if I let the computer shift itself at F/T , it would shift into another gear at 5800 RPMs 400 RPMs before redline , hurting times bad , I mean 2-3 tenths slower . , all things above are fixed with J-Mod and Tune

Get or do yourself ,change that trans fluid/filter and install a trans cooler , soon ! trans coolers are cheap around 50bucks and very easy to install , this will help keep you trans alive longer !

Not sure about stick Mustangs , but the 4R70W should not be neglected , Its a very good and strong trans that will last along time If you keep it in good shape !
Its amazing how many people neglect Auto tranmissions , I guess out of sigh out of mind , dont be that guy

Cant wait for Pics!

4.10's or bust. The prev owner put 3.73's in my car and I wish they would of saved me the time and installed 4.30's. (I don't fear the gear!)

I disagree with everyone who says to go with 4.10s on an auto. If you plan on going forced induction down the road, especially of the positive-displacement variety, I would highly recommend 3.73s or even 3.55s instead. I can't imagine what 4.10s would be like in my car; it's already ridiculously traction limited on the street with 3.73s, and I would be running out of gear in the 1/4 with 4.10s and above.

I agree if you go F/I you don't want 4.10s but if you are staying N/A then you want 4.10s. 3.73s are still a fun gear and I said I would never change but I have 4.10s sitting in my room waiting to go in next month, I can't wait. I'm almost more exited to get the gears in then the Stage II cams.

+1 , 4.10s are great if you stay under about 112mph in the 1/4 mile , because thats all you get out of 3 gear , shifting at F/T into O/D with forced induction with a near stock 4R70W would end your trans real quick !

As others said, dont waste any money on bolt ons yet. Go straight for 4.10s (they are perfect, some guys even like 4.30s and I can imagine why) and get a handheld tuner to improve shifting and give you a bit of extra hp.

It makes a HUGE difference from stock. Much more than anything else I've done to my car.

I'd be pissed if I'd bought 3.73s!!!

Skip the 3.73's and get either the 4.10's or the 4.30's.

4.30`s are a big no no , his stock trans would be shifting into O/D before the 1/4 mile mark , bad call , a stock 4R70W O/D band would be toast !

Even with 4.10`s 3rd is done around 112mph

Ok then, how about this: TCI Kevlar OD band - $34
B&M SuperCooler transmission cooler - $65 to $80
TCI "Saturday Night Special" torque converter - $500

What about that?

You still don't want to be shifting into overdrive in the 1/4. It's not good for your E/T.
