Don't you mean 'hard' instead of "spongy"?

Lack of vacuum will cause a hard pedal, not soft. It can also cause idle problems when pressing the brakes.

alright so if i get a vacuum can, my power brakes and steering should be fine with the 274xe? Thanks to all who have helped me out.

Power steering is unaffected by vacuum.
On your specific car, sounds like brakes are the only issue.
I would try it without the canister first. If you need it, plug it in later... no big deal.
