I'm getting my '73 Mach 1 painted and I want to get it done '71 style with the black on the rockers and the black on the hood. I also want the tail area painted like a Boss 351. Where would I get some guides or patterns showing the exact layout of the black on the car? I don't want to give the painter a picture of a car and say match this.

Been there! Here is what I have--there was a yellow 73 in Mustang Monthly about 3 or 4 months ago that is an original paint car with the hockey stick stripes. I took lots of pictures of that same car when I saw it at the Rancho Santa Margarita Ford show about 2 years ago. The difference I found with my 73 versus a friend's earlier car (72) was that he had aluminum or stainless moldings on the lower section of the body to divide the rocker blackout from the rest of the car. I don't have those moldings, but the yellow 73 gave me a plan. I did diverge from the paint scheme on the yellow car at the front where the hockey stripe meets the front valence--you can see it in the pictures I have of the yellow car and on my web site for my car. PM me with your email address and I will send you lots of pictures I took of the yellow car- they are too big and there are too many of them.

The yellow 73 is one of my references I used, another was a web site that has base issue Mustang Monthly hood blackout treatments. Here is the URL for the hood blackout:

Here is a URL for my website so you can see the results of following the pattern: http://members.dslextreme.com/users/mustangdave/1973Stang.html
This paint scheme gets lots of attention and thumbs up from other motorists--good luck with yours!

Here is the areas where the stripe meets the valence. Remember, the yellow car is original 1973 paint and stripes. The red car is mine and is with the stripes you can buy today (basically what you may have to do as well....). Notice how the small stripe on the red car curves back towards the wheel. I used that 1/4" stripe and 1/4" spacing to go all the way down the side of the car following the body line. I had to put the fenders back on in the booth to lay the stripes out, but absolutely worth the time!!! I hope this helps you.
