got '12 GT gas indicator down to 3 miles left

i was cutting it close to get to the best gas deal. the gauge needles lit up BRIGHT RED as an additional warning i think after 5 miles left.

anyone else had their mustang down to fumes? what is the real limit? will the mustang still go a bit further even after 0 miles left on the digital indicator?

I wouldn't know I don't like to cut it that close, and I'm knowing to wait. As soon as mine hits 25, that's when I'm looking for a gas station

I have had my '05 say 0 miles to empty. It was still running well enough. I believe it is just an approximate number, based on mileage for that particular tank.

isnt it bad for the fuel pump if you do this to often? i think its called cavitating or something like that? lol
i tried to keep her above 50 so that little orange light doesnt come on and people think i have a CEL lol

Lowest I've ever gone was 20 miles to E. Based on how much it took to fill at that point, I figured there must be approximately 1 gallon left (or perhaps slightly less) when it actually gets down to 0 to E. Real limit depends on how much of that last gallon you can actually pick up.

I rarely fill up before I have 0 miles left. I go 10 to 15 miles past 0 miles often. I HATE to get gas before it needs gas. I got it figured out pretty well, but finally when the car had around 105,000 miles I ran out for the first time. Gas station was a block away, but UPHILL. Had to walk and buy a one gallon tank...LOL. I was laughing about it then too, cause I knew I was pushing it.

It's been my experience that when it gets to 0 you have two gallons left.

I tried that one time only pushing it to the limits. It was before my mustang came along, I was still driving a ricer (yes I know, but I love both my cars if I could afford a GT and STI at the same time I would but unfortunately can't), 1996 200sx that was riced out to the max looked sharp, lowered; 17's; car was red with everything blacked out; Y'd exhaust; not a bad car for e-3 pay in the military....but back to the story. Me and my wife were driving from FL to MI for her to meet my parents for the first time, this was back in 02. She mentioned don't you think you should pull over for gas, and me being myself nah I can make it one more exit. Go behold there was not one coming anytime soon, by time we got to a exit that advertised gas we pulled off, and it couldn't be right off the express way had to drive down some dark roads in St. Louis, not the most pleasant place to be at around 0100 in the mornning. As we're filling up, a man approaches the vehicle and says "hey can you give me change for a $20" my reply is "there is a cashier up there, they may be able to help you out", he was persistant on trying to get me to take my wallet out, until he looked in my car to acknowledge my wife and seen my .45 sitting on the middle console, after that his attitude changed and was like I'll see if someone else can help me. Fool thought he was gonna jack my wallet, unfortunately for him I always carry while I travel, only difference between now and then is I can carry legally

I always wondered how many miles it would go below zero. Get the 50 mile warning and then I go to work for a couple more days and see how quick it goes down. 50...32...20...depends on the foot. I only drive 8 miles to work (16 round trip)..Then it always gets filled up.

The fuel helps keep the pump cool and lubricated, so running it too low on fuel can cause damage. Generally speaking, it's possible to cause some engine damage over time as well, depending on the design of the vehicle's fuel system.

I'll agree to the fuel cooling the pump. Lubing it? well if it is totally out, then yes, it is not getting lubed. But running very low... still getting lubed.

None the less, I have 110,000 miles on the pump and I've run it past 0 miles to empty MANY times, usually 2 or 3 times a month (since early 06). So the design is GREAT.

My 88 ate pumps about every 80,000. I treat it the same way. It has 357,000 total miles now. Not too bad...

LOL.. Thing about it is, everyone says you shouldn't do it, but I've made it work well.

Every once in a while traffic is REAL bad on a day I am determined to get home before gas. Once I get out of Nashville I have 10 mile segments between stations. My wife is NOT gonna left stop letting me hear about it when it finally happens... (That challenge alone probably motivates me...)
