well today i was showing a friend from church the car and while it was sitting idleing i just so happend to look down and the balancer looked to be wobbleing quite a bit during idle which i didnt like to see...seems to run fine while driving...no vibrations or anything cuz if it wobbles at idle i would expect it to get worse as the RPMS increase....and also....it started up and sat for maybe like a min or so....so my friend gave it 2 pretty quick revs from the throttlebody and it popped once....but not like a backfire from the exhaust but up towards/in the motor, that i also was not a fan of....it was similar to a pop i heard after the manifold install when the timing was off from removing the dizzy....so would a wobbley, maybe slipping(??) balancer possibly cause the timing to go bad again???......im seriously bummed right now cuz the car was running mint and today i seem to have noticed a balancer problem, the pop....and i was just getting all excited about finally ordering gears, and now there is no way i will be able to afford a new balancer and gears right now....just bummed...

there is always a possibility of that happening. ive never seen it happen before. maybe you have a vacuum leak and that caused it to pop replace the balancer and see if it solves it. it definently should not be wobbling. oh, i have an extra set of 3.73s that have 763 miles on them. if youd like to pm me, we could work something cheap out. itll take a little time to get them out of the old car, but itll be worth it for you

I know how that feels I was try to save up for a 65mm throttle body and wouldn't you know it my balancer went south on me. Its a part of the game things are just going to break it sucks yes but you do what you have to do. Good luck with your balancer choice.

If you do need a new balancer check out the ones from Stroker Motor http://strokermotor.com/DESCatalog/page-4-SFI.html I paid $183 shipped to my door and it was a very nice looking piece. If you do buy it, just make sure you spray it with a clear coat before you put it on or else it will rust.

It could be that the reasons for it just wobbling during idle only because it's just starting to go bad. The rubber may just be starting to slip out slightly and you’re lucky you caught it before it was too late. Have you gone under your car and examined the balancer yet to see if you can see the damage?

no i havnt....i should look for rubber coming out the back of it correct??...i know this is what others have seen but if your right about it just starting i hope i will be able to see it....should it be obvious from down there if something is going wrong....

You should look in front and behind the balancer. I had rubber coming out of both sides so it should be pretty easy to see. If the car is cold remove the crack pulley for a really clear veiw on whats going on with the balancer.

damn you Zach, thats not what i needed to hear im just playin bro....im just still bummed/pissed off because i finally saved up some money to do my gears and to have my balancer crap out on me.....i guess i should be thankful i noticed it today huh??...tomorrow ill get the car jacked up in the garage and get down there and take a look at the balancer....

you can also check your timing - often when the outer ring starts to slip, your will read some cool timing that you did not remember setting.

the outer ring can slip on the inner ring, so that it is like someone hit the one hemisphere of the outer ring with a hammer - perhaps the wobbling you see.

everyone had good advice on checking it. i cant remember who (Jadefalcon maybe) had his outer ring come off altogether. he said he could not hold the shifter. another guy launched his through the radiator.

BTW, it quells torsional vibration, so wobblying does not necessarily mean you will feel anything.
