So everything is going fine, until he tosses the car on the dyno.

He puts the reader thing in one pipe, and the thing that sucks out the exhaust to the outside on the other. Does the dyno run 7 times...all reading "Fuel economy violation"

He asks me if I have anything done to the fuel system, I say no. He goes out back, comes back, switches everything from one pipe to the other. It passes.

What the hell is going on?

The dyno is for emissions to simulate real world loads on the engine.

No they drive regularly. I think they shoot for a 2000RPM cruise RPM or 65MPH. I forget which. Kinda disappointing to see the car strapped to a dyno and NOT go WOT. I wanted the guy to gun it just to hear the exhaust.

ANyway it's not a real dyno like you all think. It just loads up the wheels so it can read the emmissions of the car while at speed and under real world load.

I wish it could spit out some HP/TQ numbers but if it could the government might used those and compare them to factory specs and fail us for "increased HP" or something.

ya in CA they use really weak mustang dynos, they arent designed to do hp.tq testing. they max out at 150hp. when ive done the tests you hold it between 2300 and 2700rpm for like 2 minutes. what it does is put strain on the motor to get it to emit NOx (nitrides of oxygen). if you have your EGR disconnected you will have high NOx.

ask to see the numbers your car spit out, and then ask to see a printout of whats required to pass. in CA thats all printed on the certificate.
