So I'm stopped at a red light last night, and I hear an engine rev. I look 2 lanes over and its 2 boners in a Mercury Mystique wanting to race when the light turns green. I couldn't help but turn my head and laugh. Now my car (95 GT auto vert) is basically stock as far as performance goes, but is there any chance I could lose to two dorks in what looked like a stock Mystique?

EDIT: Forgot to mention I was in the turn lane when I got "challenged." What a bunch of 'tards to even waste their time.

if its a 24 valve DOHC mystique then i guess there is a slight chance you could lose if your car is auto and stock, those are quick cars.

Maybe they just wanted to hear your exhaust... or maybe they had a bottle in the trunk as a surprise. Never assume they are slow until you see them run. I've seen some scary cars at the track that are ultimate sleepers.

if the mystique was a duratec v-6 it would probably run 16's or 17's in the 1/4...there are not alot of performance bolt ons for the contour/mystique platform to make them alot faster..

unless it had forced induction or a 3.0 liter swap with svt parts...there are some guys running in the 13's with contours...one guy is making over 400 hp. with an intercooled s/c...also alot of turbo guys making some sick h.p... check out www.contour.org for info on those cars...its a site i still regularly frequent, even though i just sold my contour svt,and bought a '95 gt...

whats a mystique? oh and for sleepers sake, there was a truck at the NOPI nationals last weekend that ran 12.00s in what looked like a completly stock toyota tacoma. stock tires and everything, the only thing that would have gave it away is the open downpipe behind the front wheel but you could barely notice it.

if it was a svc contour, which IS a mercury mistuque clone, you may have been own'd. they are 200 hp, 6 speed i believe. pretty fast.

When i said Mystique, I lied. It was actually a Contour, but non-SVT. I said Mystique so nobody would question weather it was a SVT. It was a beige Contour w/ hubcaps. I was thinking that since I was in the turn lane and the kids still wanted to race, that they were just idiots and their Contour was as slow as it looked, and they just didn't know any better.

Sorry GreenMustangGt. You ment svt that an easy mistake just a typo. but man not fast at all. I ain't trying to be an A$$hole just stating truth. Even if 6-speed and your claim of 200hp it has no torque. Which is much needed for light-to-light racing. I have beat one of those 6-speeds with (bolt-ons) in a 96 up civic only pushing bout 150hp. It wasnt even my car and it was the first time i drove it. Unless you put a lot of money into one of those things (which would be retarted) they aren't fast. Those motors and spray don't mix well either some idiot did it around here i think it lasted two races (on a 50 shot) and never made it through its first bottle.

If it had hubcaps it was probably the base version with the 4 banger, which = slow. Either way you are still about as fast as a well driven SVT Contour, they only run mid 15's. And the Contour SVT's had a 5 speed and a LSD.

all i know is the 24 valve DOHC ones are quick, my friends dad has the taurus with the same exact engine an it moves pretty good for an automatic 6 cylinder.

They dont have the same engine. The V6 in the Contour is the 2.5L DOHC Duratec, and it only has like 165hp160tq, whereas the Taurus has the 3.0 with 200hp/200tq.

most of you are wrong about the contour SVT...i just sold mine after having owned it for 3 years,so i do know a thing or 2...

first off it does have 200 hp.,and 165lb. ft. of torque...and it pulls hard from 4k to 7k....stock they run mid to low 15's...an svt contour will run as fast as a STOCK 94-95 AUTO gt,with the svt probably coming out ahead more times than not,and would pull on it as the distance increased all the way up to its 143 mph. top speed..(i know first hand my wife owned a 94 auto gt while i had the svt..now my lightly modded 95 gt 5 speed is faster..

also on a road course an svt contour will OWN alot of mustangs on this site on the curves...my 95 gt doesn't even come close to the handling of the svt(and its fwd)the csvt is a very nice drivers car, with enough pep to hang with alot of stuff...and to the comment about the civic with 160 hp beating an svt...i find that hard to believe it will beat a REAL svt with competent driver..

and to answer the original poster..you should easily beat any non svt contour whether it be a v6 or 4 cyl...as they generally run anywhere in the 16-18 sec. range in the 1/4...

but beware there are turbo's and s/c available, and the duratech v6 is a pretty solid motor, and lots have used a 50-75 shot with no problems at all...there are several svt's with turbo's running in the 13's and trapping at over 110 mph...if they could get traction would probably be in the 12's...not bad for a 4 door family car, that can handle the curves with the best of them..

The motors in the contours are complete pieces of shat. Worked on plenty of them. Sorry for anyone who owns one!

I raced a turbo SVT Contour a couple times and from a stop I would kill him, and from a roll it would be very even. Whoever got the jump would pull a little.

yes there are a few turbo svt's...the problem is with them getting traction off the line, fwd is terrible, and spinning and wheel hop is a major problem...one guy i know is running 8 psi. intercooled, and he runs a 13.5 at like 112mph...he spins all the way to like 60 mph....he has a video of him pulling even with a z06 from a roll in that car,he's pushing about 400 hp at the crank...that thing is sick, but it can't be launched...if he could get traction he would easily be pulling 12's...

i enjoyed owning my contour svt,but it doesn't have the torque, and overall power that my 95 gt does...but man that thing was so fun to drive on some twisty roads, where it would walk off and leave my gt...
