Hey guys, finally got everything together and got the gt40p combo with a bcam running! Im afraid to push on it so I cant really tell you guys the gains and my timing is WAYYYY off. Its actually a weird situation where my question arises. I have a timing light, jrichker stabbed the dizzy in for me once we started putting the headswap back together. I went to turn the car on for the first time, It was cranking for about 3 seconds and it came to life! I went to go adjust the timing, i have 14 marked in BRIGHT yellow, you cant miss it. So as the balancer is turning no sight of it! I think wow the timing must be REALLY OFF, so I start moving the distributor till i can finally see the 14 and it dies. I go to turn the car back on, starts up right away, and i say **** i forgot to take out the spout connecter, so I take it out and try to adjust it again, but 14 is no where to be found. I have where 14 was marked on my dizzy to the block, should I just move it back to to where it was and start over with the spout connecter out? I dont understand how the car would even start without even being able to see 14*. If the dizzy was stabbed right, not 180 off, and I put the marks togehter how could it be that off?

And also I had some concern about the rockers not being adjusted correct, and I was confident in myself that their adjusted right but they are LOUD, i hear its normal that they tick, but is it normal to be able to hear them over my bullet mufflers and o/r hpipe? At idle you cant hear them but once you accelerate their loud, and its more of a humming sound I guess cause their moving so fast, thats normal right? Is their a chance the rockers are hitting my valve covers? would it even run like that? They are pedistal 1.6 scorpion rockers and i have the frpp valve covers, and they cleared before and with the gasket i would think theyd be no problem. Other then that the car is running GREAT 2nd gear=no traction, ive driven the car for about 10 miles to work and back, and other then the timing giving me some problems i think its doing great.

The car was doing great and then I pushed it alittle and I hadent filled up the coolant compltley because it had to run through the system so it was overheating so coming up to a light i turn the car off, when it turned gree i went to start it again and it was cranking real slow, I tried again and it cranked slow but then started, could that be the timing being off? I can tell the timing being off is hurting my performance aswell. Any help would be appreciated.

sounds like your 180 out..rockers should sound like 16 little sewing machines, loud likely means out of adjustment.

Ill try to get a video of them tomorrow, they are loud, i guess I didnt adjust them right. And when its 180 out i guess the timing is so off that it compinsates? Ill mess with it tomorrow, ill try putting it back on the mark and seeing if it works, if not i guess ill have to turn it around, thats all I do right? just turn it 180*?

And for the rockers what could happen if their out of adjustment? Could they go a few weeks till i get some money to get them adjusted correctly?

Im also thinking the loud sound may be an exhaust leak, I had trouble getting the new headers tightened all the way, and the ticking sound sound like it came from the valve coves but that could easily be mistaken for the headers since their neighbors, ill try and tighten the bolts down more tomorrow.

Im not really an expert, but if the dizzy were 180 out, wouldnt the car run like complete garbage? like almost not run at all? are you sure you marked the Balancer right? your timing could be right on. Do you have any popping from the exhaust or intake? The rockers could be out of adjustment, but im guessing you have an exhaust leak.. Im not an expert, but just some things to check..

does it tick loud then you revv it?

You cant stab the dizzy a tooth off because you can just rotate it alittle further to compensate. I agree that the balancer might be marked wrong. Make sure its marked right and its never a bad idea to get a nice new one to replace the stock one if funds permit. I've seen the rubber come out of a stock ballancer with 70k miles on it.

I have a stock dizzy with msd cap and rotor and that stuff. I guess I didnt put the dizzy in 180 off or like you guys said it wouldnt run at all or bearly. I know my balancer is marked correctly because I did it a while ago and ive set my timing to that mark before. I probably messed it up by forgetting to take out the spout connecter, ill put it at my mark and start again. See what happens.

I dont hear any popping or backfiring through the intake or exhaust, but when i go to shift gears and let off the gas I can hear it very loud and then it slowly gets quieter. I started it again, and I really think it may be an exhaust leak, im going to tighten down all the header bolts again and see what happens. THanks guys.

HA! put the timing light on it, saw 14, but the timing was at about 25*!!! shes at 14 now :) And it definatly sounds like an exhaust leak, i gotta get the headers tightened up, ill keep you guys updated, i wanna take her out and beat on her! but i wont :(

so what was wrong.......about the noise, did you replace your lifters?

no i didnt, I think its an exhaust leak, it sounds like one, and its only coming from one part of the header on one side.

You guys think a shop will charge anything to tighten down header bolts? I just cant get to it, open end wrench dosent work and i cant get a socket on it.

Just took the car for a spin going to get some more coolant, before I would go ahead and say my car was slow. It was quick but you never got that feeling it was fast. I was taking it easy and turning onto and empty street I said I have to. No traction in first expected, getting past 2krpm in 2nd i get this amazing gut feeling and my neck being pulled back, and past 3k you feel the car is FLYING, i hit 3rd gear look at the speedo and im already going like 90 im like WTF!! ive never felt anything like that before, im addicted, cant wait for the track! after the springs go in though :( im afriad to rev past 5k.

Hey Nick - why not use some hex cap screws that use allen keys instead of using hex bolts? I have the same headers you do, and I couldn't get a socket or open end wrench on some of the bolts either. I went ahead and replaced them with Grade 5 hex caps and lock washers. Problem solved! It would also help to have a set of allen drives for your socket set.

This was suggested to me before but I didnt really think of it. Ill go ahead and see if I can find some at the parts store. If they dont have it can I just get them at homedepot? What size bolts do i need? Thanks! Ive had to go to the parts store to get a few alan wrench sockets, a set would be nice, i should look into that.

Stainless steel allen head capscrews are available at Skycraft located at Fairbanks & I-4 in Winter Park. The ones you need are 3/4" long, 3/8"-16 thread and cost abot 20 cents each. That's what I am using, and they work great.
