i finally got my 3:73's switched out to 3:27's....and wow does this car pull hard now in 1st and 2nd....like a kick in the back.

All it needed was some load.

Plus now its a cruise-o-matic as far as rpms and shifting!

3.73's ---> 3.27's = better pull
This goes against everything I believed.... please elaborate

Actually, he went to a higher gear.


I think some boosted cars need a higher gear in order to get the car to shift (and feel right) at the optimum power range. Something along those lines.

first gear is useless with any more than like 250rwhp when you have tall gears, this guy is probably pushing over 400 (just a guess) so do the math, some 3.27s would be much better for driveability.

im totally lost i got an automatic so everyone sugest using 4:10 but im putting nos on it do i lower gears and probley some time next year maybe in the winter i will be swaping the nos for a supercharger? so what gears should i buy now?

Several things you need to consider about different gear ratios and the application you use them for.

As said above ... na and pa makes things VERY different

Also a na stock or bolt on Stang acts differently
as opposed to
A na Stang with h/c/i for two main reasons

1) the power band has been shifted up
2) the power band has been extended

If you're gonna have a quick na stick trans Stang that works half way decent when you take it to the strip

The following needs NOT to be at the top of your concerns list

1) first gear traction when driving on the street
2) first gear being too short
3) highway cruise rpm's being too high

The things listed above and more might cause you to see that there may come to be a point in your Stang's life when ............

you start to see you need a beater to get around in so things like we talked about above don't cause you to have compromise your performance goals due to your Stang is your only mode of transportation.

Bottom line on gear ratios is ........
its the application that dictates the ratio

Perfect example is as above with Kyle ...........

A guy with a turbo will generally want a lower (numerically) ratio
than
A guy with a na h/c/i combo that does the weekend 1320 thing

whell, my 3:73's were great when i was n/a....i was very happy, BUT with turbos its a whole different game. Turbos are load dependant as they use the exiting exhaust to spool. With my 3:73's first gear was so short that it wasent putting a full load on the car, so it wouldent build much boost, then when i hit second it would pull twice as hard as 1st gear, and usually just blow the tires off on the upshift.

Now, 1st gear is like it should, it pulls very hard, and 2nd gear pulls even harder then before....it builds full boost in the gear because it has load. What made me realize that i wasent getting my full potential was when i got into the throttle going up a hill....it hit full boost almost instantly and kicked sideways in 2nd at around 3,000-4,000 rpm.....something it wouldent do on flat ground. Now it just peels tires as i roll into the boost at around 3000-4000 rpm in 2nd on level ground!

as an added bonus, i get to cruise much better as i daily drive my car, and less shifting. Ohh am i happy, and once again let me add that i love turbos.

As said before, the turbos widen the torque band, thus is is better to have smaller (numerically) gears because the longer you can stay in your powerband, the better.

Since a stock mustang has a very narrow powerband, bigger (numerically) gears allow you to use all 4 gears and stay in the narrow torque band.

And of course as mentioned above, keeping it in the lower gear longer keeps the turbos spooled properly. Busting through gears really fast while lifting the throttle to shift kills the constant load.

what ratio would be the best of both worlds for a bolt on n/a car? good acceleation yet liveable on the highway? 3.08's make the car seem so droopy.

There really can't be a "best of both worlds" here.

But 3.27's are right there in the middle of your average N/A and FI setups.

i vote 3:55's for a na combo....they are very good still on the highway but is as far as i would want to go....although i did have 3:73s that i was happy with, but i have no problem going 70 on the highway....many people want to go faster.

You and I think alike. I have 3.55's in the '94 and very-much like them. I however am not a fan of numerically large gears.

I had a turbocharged Porsche and the gearing was numerically low and it was wonderful. Boost came on very early and I had enough gear to keep it spooled. I did some tinkering and the A/R was not optimal for the set-up, but under acceleration it could still pull stool right out of your colon.
