so a few weeks ago a 96ish Ford Ranger came into work for running rough and we found the engine was on it's last leg's. low low compression on 2 cyl's and it runs rough. We told the owner what was up and he desided to buy something new. So today he asked me if I wanted it for nothing. How could I refuse right. It's a reg cab short box stepside and nice Black paint in awsome shape body wise and it has a 3.0L 5 speed in it. was thinking a 302 swap was in order but don't know what will happen. I might just try and change the engine and drive it as a DD or sell it and make some extra bucks for the GT. also thought about selling the box off it and parting the rest out.

What should I do with this thing. I couldn't see it go to waste and I dont have the time or money for a project right now but for the price I had to take the offer lol

Myself, I'd either rebuild or replace the motor, and then drive the snot out of it. I'd love to have a little Ranger for a daily beater, especially a 5-speed 4.0 V-6 (although a 3.0 ain't too shabby, either). Handy little beast to have around when you wanna haul large parts for the 'Stang and whatnot.

How do all of you people keep coming up with these free or nearly-free cars?

I think if I swap the engine a 5.0L H.O will be going in. I can have a engine from a lincoln mark VI for probly $400 and it runs. I would wreck some tires lol

I woulnd't be able to leave something like that alone. 302 HO, beef up the drivetrain a little, put some great breaks on it and make it a mini-towing power house.

Its a Ford motor and Ford makes the Mazda B trucks so it fits both.

I did one of these a couple years ago with a Mazda B2000.

It did take a couple more bucks than I anticipated, but I made a buck or two in the end. Kind of a fun project, no hurring, etc.

drop in a JY motor and drive it. IMO ranger = ultimate DD truck if you dont HAVE to haul and tow.
