OK, so I got a resto estimate for my '91 that I cracked up over the summer. Front end got goofy with another car's hitch. So, to repair the whole thing, including all new front end hardware and framework, pulling out a couple of dents and dings around the car (I have a couple of good ones), install a Cervini's Stalker kit, all molding (including the quarter windows), windshield, hood, paint, after tax, $8500. I think there were a few other things included. My only gripe is that to replace the moldings around the quarter windows, it's like $1,200 or $1,400 EACH because it's a whole assembly that has to be pulled prepped, redone and reinstalled. I saw that mustangs unlimited has a molding cover that adheres over the originals for under $100, I may look at that before dumping a few grand on two window mouldings. Any thought? The guy does some great looking work, seemed reasonable for the amount of work being done.
 
Car took a nice shot in the front, though. And his work is pristine. I thought about swapping my parts into another car, and I've been looking around, but it would probably end up costing the same in the end. Also, as I said earlier, I may be able to shave $2,500 to $3,000 off if I skip doing the rear quarter windows. That brings me down to about $6,000. I gotta take and post pics to show what needs to be done. I also asked for a show quality exterior.
 
someone threw a rock into my drivers side quarter window last summer... i was quoted 700 for just that one window, not installed... i found one used for 100, and installed for 50...

so ridiculously expensive.

OK, so you're saying that if I shortcut the quarter windows and cut the price to under $6000, it's still too much? I gotta post pics. Plus, I've been looking for another car for the last three months and keep coming up dry.
 
I do plan on keeping the car. It's going to be my weekend ride. I also didn't add that the car had already been into an accident before I bought it (5 years ago). So either way, it's not like the car didn't need the work. So, is what everyone is saying here that they have never heard of nor participated in restoring a car? The only thing at this point not being done is having the engine compartment painted. That's it. Car also drives straight as an arrow. Why not fix it? Sure, I could have a half-assed job done to save money, but what if this were a '65 stang rotted to the frame? In the end, it's all just a matter of money.
 
If it were a 65 it would be MUCH different. A near mint lower mileage fox can be had for $8000, a near mint 65 car isnt going to be $8000 its going to be easily $15K+. This is what I personally would do, you can do whatever you want!

sounds reasonable if everthing is r&ied and he uses quality materials.but the quater glass price is wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy off!all i do is mustangs(aside from money paying collision work)and i usaully refinishe peoples quarter glass moldings at about $150 per side(looks like new when done,and lasts longer to).at any rate the price is kinda right i would usaully charge anywhere from $3000 to $4500 for a full paint with jambs(everything r&ied and show quality finish)plus you have some frame damage and are installing an aftermarket body kit(cervini stuff is great but still needs some shaving to fit correctly)so that number same good.what shop is it??i am from l.i. and there are a ton of crapy shops out there so be careful.
 
Shop is Perfect Bodies in Bohemia. Guy did my friend's '89 T/A, thing is mint. Guy is a perfectionist, judging from the work I saw there. Just a reminder, but I'm probably not going to have him do the quarter moldings, it's way too steep. You say you're on L.I. and do the moldings, you want the job? $300 sure as all hell beats $3000. He explained to me why it's so pricey, but I dunno. But I figure for about $6000, the rest of the work is reasonable. By the way, if someone can point out a black Mustang GT to me in perfect shape within my area, please, feel free. Most that I see are @#$% boxes.

I can tell you why the quarter windows are so pricey, cuz hes going on a vacation with the profit from those alone.
 
6k is reasonable for the car, but I don't think it is going to ge you a show quality(and I mean DAMN good paint job). I know one guy who spent 17k on his paint on his 1970 Challenger R/T, now THAT is a show quality paint job. I mean 6k is going to be a great paintjob, I paid around 3500 for my paint and then about 1500 more in body work and I got a damn fine paintjob. Hope it comes out good!
 
Thanks, I hope so too. Like I said, the reason why I'm going with this shop is how well my friend's black car came out. Like a mirror. He only paid in the $3500 range, and that included some rust cleanup. I mean, what does it really take for the paint job to be show quality? I'm not doing shows myself, I'm doing the car for myself.
 
here is that challenger, Only a few thousand were made in verts in 70, couple hundreds of yellow ones. Guy got offered something like 95k for it and he turned it down!

Sounds like you've already decided, your asking the question is just not netting you the response you wanted. Well I can only say that my car is a show queen for the most part...it was damaged and the results were attained for under 4000. If you want to spend 8000 for a car that will net you 6000-7000 on the open market, then by all means go right ahead. If it were me I'd buy the clean 2000-3000 car and spend the 3000 to make it right...keep your car and use the parts and part it out..you'll make out well.
