The alternator came installed with a serpatine pulley. and it says to use an impact wrench to remove it if a v-belt is used. anything else. wouldn't it just spin the whole fan, nut, bolt faster. how would that loosen it?

Place a rag on the blades and hit it with an impact.
Check the threads to see what direction is loosning first.
it may have a left hand thread.

I used one of the rubber strap wrenches to hold the pulley and the impact to remove the nut

Standard rotation may mean for charging.

Cheking means that you don't have to learn the hard way like I have.

Yes, impact is the way to go. Use a rag or if you are very carefull, wedge in a screwdriver. Just something to help hold it steady without putting too much skin at risk. Do it all the time at work, piece of cake.

make a quick trip to autozone, bring them the right socket and they could do it for you for free.
