Gouged by the dealership

My fuel level sending unit went bad. The Ford dealer wants $77.00 plus tax for a new one. I always feel that I'm taking it up the rear when I buy parts from them. A couple years ago I had the gas tank out to repair a leak and I broke one of the retaining clips/nuts. New nuts come in packs of four only and cost $18.32. I decided to get a new bolt also but those only come in packs of two for $8.52. Total with tax was $28.45. Seven weeks after I ordered them they still were not in. :bang: I canceled the order and made my own clips/nuts which is something i don't think I can do with the fuel level sending unit. Anyone else feel they got gouged by the dealership?

Every one pays a premuim for dealership work/parts. I was fortunate to have had worked for a dealer so my discount never experied when I left as long as one of the guys from back in the day was there. Next time try and catch a tech walking (not working) and ask if he has a part your looking for or knows a tech that might. You will save money and they are always looking for ways to make money. But if they are working try not to bug them they hate that....

I've been given an employee discount on occasion but I never seem to get the same guy twice at the parts counter. As for bargaining on price, the woman who waited on me on Friday responded with "do you want the part or not?" I picked up the fuel level sending unit at lunch today and it amounts to a float, a switch, and an electrical connection. They do throw in a new gasket though.

guy sells parts on svtperformance for 10% over cost. can get any fms part i believe.

yeah, the dealers do gouge though. that price is about what everyone sells sending units for.

Last time I bought a sending unit (and I'm dating myself here) it was $20 and had the bonus of having the fuel pickup on it. I know it gets worse when buying parts for foreign cars. I got a friend with a turbo Mitsubishi that the dealer wanted $270 for the oil cooler (I keep telling him to go American). A guy with a Benz ripped his front bumper cover/spoiler off by 4 wheeling through the green area between our parking lot and the neighbors and the dealer wanted $2k. The guy was threatening to sue the owner of our building 'til the owner pointed out his tire tracks through the green area.
