Hey, I'm new and own a gray mustang convertible 5 speed. Yesterday when gearing down to a stop and putting the shift stick in neutral while applying pressure on the brake I noticed a knocking/tapping noise coming from the driver side rear wheel or rear end. It contiued to get worse an worse to the point where i can feel it in the shift stick.

Thanks for the help.

When you brake does your car shutter? Can you feel it in the brake pedal?

Maybe you have warped rotors?

Could be your rear wheel bearings. Mine were shot. The guy who did my rear-end work (installing 4.10s while there) showed them to me. All pitted
and nasty. Says he has been seeing quite a few fairly low mileage Mustangs with bad bearings. Mine is a 2000 with under 50,000 miles. I would only hear the grinding noise when off the throttle. Hope this helps.

I only feel it when i'm in the lower gears and when i pop the stick into neutral while braking at a light. I kinda feel it in the brake but its not that noticeable.

Thanks for the help so far.

Are your rotors in good shape?
Have you checked to see if there is a caliper sticking?
Is the brake system full of fluid and free from air?

OK, I took it to a mechani and he put it on jacks. He rotated the back wheels with his hands and the ticking noise appeared. He went under the car and I rotated the wheels he said it was coming from the gearbox or in that area and it had nothing to do with the bearings or wheel.

What could it be?

Thanks for the help so far.

maybe your rear end is shot? i have a friend who drives a ranger, and the rear end just blew out on that and that sounds like the noise his truck was making. do you beat the crap out of your car? you could check the Ujoints too, I did mine @ about 70k miles and noticed the bearings were demolished/missing on them... just a possibility

Tail shaft maybe or rear end can sound like it's coming from the gearbox and you can feel the stick bumpping ect.
