So Im to blame for this one. Yeah I'll own up to it.
I put too much fluid in my rear end. I got a new T/A diff cover and filled it way too much. I drove it on the streets, highway, and 1320 and during the process I really did some damage.

The rear end is making some considerable noise and my mechanic told me that he has to replace all the rear bearings. Could I have blown the stock diffferential at the same time. The main reason I ask is because if this is possible I might as well replace it while its torn apart. Lesson learned: dont fill the diff up to the fill hole in a T/A diff cover, get on the other side (where the drive shaft connects to the axle) use a square ended socket wrench (like a 1/4in end of a socket wrench extension piece) and fill until it spills out.

Repeat: DO NOT FILL UP THE THE FILL HOLE IN YOUR NEW T/A FILL HOLE!

What should I do? What do you guys suggest? I've given up on my mechanical talents and I've decided to pay someone who know what they're doing to get things done. I don't have lots of money to throw at the Stang at the moment as I'm saving up for a Kart so please make your suggestions budget minded.
Thanks so much,
fawcett

i dont know how so much fluid could ruin a rearend, it would put alot of strain on the drivetrain though, not unless you broke some teeth then i can see damage be done.

I have Royal Purple diff. fluid out back, it says it comes with the friction modifier, but what do you guys think?
Does it have enough of the right stuff in there to keep things slippery or could this be the culpret of my problems? I drove it yesterday-from my uncles office where I've been storing it to the shop doing the work on it. It sounds pretty bad...
Please Help!

i have the same problem, had to take rearend out like 4 times, i reshimed the pinion, replaced pinion inner race and bearing due to improper installation, retorqued ring gear, hopefully it fixed the noise i will find out tommorrow, so maybe i'll be thankfull for something.

did you use the ford fraction additive when you changed the fluid? if not, that would cause a grinding noise in the rear. i think it cost about 4 or 5 bucks at the dealer.

i had the same issue a few months back. so i changed the fluid and added the additive and drove my car for a few miles and the noise ceased.

I posted this above but its cool
-The Royal Purple diff fluid says on the bottle that the friction modifier is not needed-its already in there. I guess what I could do is just spend the whopping 4 bucks and see if it helps at all.

Im really bumming about this and seriously considering just looking for a rear end from a wrecked sn95 to swap over.

Will a newer 8.8 from a new edge mustang work or do I need to look at 94-95 specifically?

Thanks for the replies guys, you've made my Thanksgiving

Sorry to repeat...
96-98 axles are longer than 94-95's
or 79-95's?
For some reason I thought 94-98's or even 94-04's were all the same size.
Please advise me,
Thanks everyone

ok so i can get any 94-98 rear end and ill be fine?
why does MPS list them seperatly?
I ask only because ideally a 98 should (which i use loosly) have less miles than a 94.
Less miles=Less wear
Right?
