Grinding/rubbing noise coming from my rear end~~

Hey guys,

My car (2004 GT, 5-speed) is making a weird grinding/rubbing noise which sounds like its coming from the rear end. It only happens when I'm slowing down from like 10mph-0 and sometimes when I put it in reverse and move backwards slowly. It just makes a grunt for about 1-2 seconds and disappears.


ANyone have any clue what this could be?

your trac-lok whatever its called could be screwed up, bearings could be shot, or your missing a few teeth on rear gears.

From your description it could be as simple as bad brakes. Does it get worse if your turning at the speeds that it happens at?

+1 on bad brakes. But for info sake.... How many miles are on it and has it ever had a gear swap or any rear work done?

It doesnt make any sound really at all at high speeds or turning at slow speeds, it happens when I'm going straight mainly or just pulling into my garage slowly...

The rear end has 4.10 gears in it with about 15K miles on them, 35K total miles on the car with about 10 track passes only. Is it possible that my pinion bearings could be already worn?

35k and not many track passes.... Not likely that you broke anything with stock power unless the install was bad. But doubt that as you've got quite a few miles on it. Does the noise go away or come when you apply the brakes?

I definately don't have stock power, its 365rwhp with a Vortech and a bunch of other crap... the noise only happens when I'm braking and coming to a stop, like under 10mph. And I never notice it when the car is first going, it seems after I drive it for about 20-30 minutes, then the noise will happen sometimes... like every other stoplight or something. Its hard to describe the sound, wish I could do a soundclip of it Best I can say is that it is like a 2 second burst of almost metal grinding and you can feel it shake the car a bit even

Anyway, sounds like its a brake issue still. Thats really the only thing that can cause the type of issue you describing only at low stopping speeds. If it were a rear end or other issue you would notice it at all speeds and it would likely worsen at higher speeds.

The brakes are easy to take apart and check. Maybe you got a rock in something and it gouged your rotor or pad and all you hear is the aftermath now.

Sounds like the rear caliper's slide pins need some cleaning & lube. Mine exibited this a few years back. I usually check these every year or so during a tire rotation. Kind of a nasty environment under there.
