so i came across an '87 coupe that is for sale for $600 that is somewhat close to me. the interior and windshield are gone (still waiting to see just how much of the interior is stripped). it does have a motor that will come with it (stock 302) and i'm not sure about the trans. i was planning on building my GT but have really grown to like the coupes. is there a difference in how to the two cars would handle as a finished product? my ultimate goals are to have a comfortable cruiser as it will spend most of its life on the street, but it will definitely see some autocrossing, hopefully some road courses and open road racing. would a coupe be a bad choice for any of that? from what i remember they were a bit lighter than the hatch cars correct? didn't also have a stiffer chassis? any opinions?

also came across an '86 coupe with a v6. how hard would it be to put an '87 5.0 in there, and convert it to 5sp? i know the suspension was different from '86 to '87 but i had already planned on upgrading the suspension/brakes/5-lug on my current car. would the same upgrades work for a 4-eye or are the parts specific to 85-86 foxes?

Was it a v-8 car from the factory? If not, make sure you have a new 8.8 rear among other things in your budget.

If I remember correctly the coupes are like 300lbs lighter than the hatch cars, I'm not really sure about having a stiffer suspension tho.

Best of luck

I think the v6 K member will work. I believe it's the earlier cars with the inline 6, that need the K member swapped for a V8.

i was already seriously considering chaing the k-member on the GT. do you know if there would have to be any modifications done to swap in a v8 after k-member since it was a v6 to begin with? also, do you know if the '87+ suspension pieces are the same as the 85-86 pieces?

You should have no modifications, or problems with installing an aftermarket K member in your car. Yes the 87+ suspension will be different than the 86.

K-frame interchange is as follows:

Capri '85 Front; from 2/85
Capri '86 Front
LTD '85 Front; 4 cyl and 6 cyl, from 2/85, std duty
LTD '86 Front; std duty
Marquis '85 Front; from 2/85, std duty
Marquis '86 Front; std duty
Mustang '85 Front; exc. SVO; from 2/85
Mustang '86 Front; exc. SVO
Mustang '87-93 Front; 4 cyl

Mustang '87-93 Front; 8 cyl

And yes...the inline 6 K-frame is by itself. The V6 K-frame and V8 K-frames are the same.
