I heard of people gutting mass air meters, and I was just wondering what they meant. I also was wondering what kind of a gain would you expect in doing this? Thanks
Remove the screen and cut out the piece of plastic inside and sand it down flush. Make sure you take the sensor off first. As far as gains, well very little. But I like to think it helps a little.
I did this on my '98 and it cost me 9 hp on the dyno. Car would cut out in upper RPM's. May not be the same result for everyone, just what I experienced. Put on a 77 mm Pro-M and gained 13 hp.

The Pro-M doesn't have the huge post going through the middle that the stock one has so the volume of air going through the meter is actually greater. Can't argue with the results. I was extremelly pleased. In fact the combo of just the meter and my MAC catted H-pipe netted me 25 hp over my stock baseline (258 hp vs. 283 hp currently).
I did it on my '98 Cobra and noticed a few tenths gain at the track. I never had a chance to dyno it so I don't know the difference it made in horsepower. It did make the car run very rich though.
On mine, I left the hole that the sensor element goes through and cut out the rest of the "channel" that goes across the middle of the meter housing.
I've heard only a handful of people that have really had any good luck with gutting the stock MAF...I've heard problems with idle and driveablility with a lot of surging...To me, it's not worth it to get 1-2hp from it, if it doesn't actually hurt performance...
