gutting flowmaster 40 series...

i wanted to strait pipe my car, but still make it at least look "legal". as far as i knwo the flowmaster 40's only have 1 baffle inside. with that removed would it still give me the flow that a strait pipe would? as well as more sound? or will it basicly sound the same (which i don't see how it could). Has anyone else done this???

i personally wouldnt gut the flows sell them, and get some cheap glasspacks i dislike the sound of glasspacks. Get some dynomax bullets or SLp exhast

i think i'm just going to have a pipe made to fit where the mufflers one were. this way i can put the flows back on or off freely.

if you were set on opening up the flows have you thought about drilling holes in the baffles themselves to keep the basic design of the muffler intact and retain the sound, but the extra holes might increase flow (if they dont create turbulence) Just an idea, not sure if it holds any water.

You will make less horsepower and torque with straight pipes and sound like a redneck Maybe get some Flowmaster one chamber race mufflers?

well, i think theres where if i took the baffle out it would basicly make a one chamber.. yes/no??? Same principle i would think, prob not as good as an actual one chambr, but a lot cheeper....

Not sure about the gutting thing, doesn't sound like it would work to well, and I don't see how you're going to get into the muffler to perform this surgery, unless you're just going to take one end of a wrench and bang around in there.

Straight pipes sound terrible to myself and almost everyone else.

Not really sure, maybe check out Flowmaster's website and see if they have a diagram or picture of the inside of the 40 Series and One Chamber? You might be able to make them the same internally but the One Chamber is a lot smaller overall. The entire muffler is about 1/3 of the size of the 40 Series.

A friend of mine cuts open flows and takes out the baffles, then welds them back together, then cuts off the entire output pipe so that it's just the back of the muffler. It kinda sucks that he has no dumps, but it sounds like all kinds of hell under his car, and it's totally unique sounding.

yeah i mena i looked at the race mufflers and dynomax bullets etc.. there basicly straight threw.. so it's liek not even having a muffler.
i also have the bbk h-pipe with cats which makes it a more smooth sound. Which gets the cray redneck poping sound and takes it out, as well as adding some back pressure. plus i think the mustang 5.0l has the best sounding engine, they are very good sounding even with no mufflers etc ( had it commin out of the headers for about 2 days ) then got the flows, bbk etc. other then having fire underneath you i thought it sounded good. little crackaly but with the cats thats basicly gone...
for the performance standpoint. everyone always says yu need a muffler, you need this type of pipe and header etc, btu i alwasy wondered.. then why does basicly every drag car have open headers?? somethign to ponder over.... if there was a muffler tht gave more power then nothing t all wouldn't you think they woudl use them? dunno just was thinking that over

btu i alwasy wondered.. then why does basicly every drag car have open headers?? somethign to ponder over.... if there was a muffler tht gave more power then nothing t all wouldn't you think they woudl use them? dunno just was thinking that over

They make a buttload more horsepower than we do, that's why. It's more efficient to run open headers on a engine that makes that much hp and tq. Having a full length exhaust system would just choke up the engine. For instance, must mild to modded street 5.0's use a 2.5 inch exhaust. If you have a really modded 5.0 or 5.8+ then most guys use 3 inch exhaust.

hunter26 is RIGHT!! You WILL loose on a straight pipe!!!! Or a straight thru Glass pack!! The Flows are designed to work on the cars exhaust SOUND WAVES to scavenge the exhaust!! and Straight pipe will stumble all over its self and loose power... But as mentioned... the sound is sweeeet... but usually we hear that sound form the ole red neck pick up with one pipe hanging down and the other up with a coat hanger!!

Try this... have a set of Cut outs installed!! then you can un-cap, have fun, and cap back up when the cops come!! Cause from what I hear..Pa has some really strict car laws... cool??

if you cut the baffles out of the 40's you will ruin the muffler and the performance willl be less then if you left it alone.. the baffle is there for a reason.. to scavnge the exhaust and get it out of the exhaust system faster and at more velocity then if you cut the baffle and then welded the muffler back.. then you would have a big echo chamber but the exhaust gases would not be aimed correctly to get the velocity that flowmaster made in the muffler.. basically the exhaust gases woudl go in the chamber and then get tied up and not escape with the same velocity that the baffle aim's and throws the gases out the back..
