Actually, it's a little more simple than that. Just buy a shorter belt and let everything sit where it is . The only reasons I can think of to remove it would be for weight reduction and because it's ugly down in there. Plus, you're ready if you ever have to pass a visual emissions test

I used an 887K6 to bypass the smog pump with ASP pulleys. Had to boil it in water to get it to go on the first time.

What are the advantages of running a short belt and bypassing the smog pump? Is it gonna free up some HP? In other words, is it worth $30 for a new belt?

Gets rid of the ugly thing. I used a 84 1/4 i think.

Well, don't forget that the smog pump runs piping to the back of the heads. You can solve this issue by removing the piping, cutting the piping off at the connecting adapters and then turning the adapters around before re-installing them.
