OK i have some serious questions here. I'm thinking about doing a set of cams but i am trying to gather as much info as possible. I was looking at the comp cams xe262ah. But my criteria is i'm not looking for the most power gain. I want as good a drivability as i can get i drive the car alot. I dont want the car to not run good or smooth under normal driving. 1000 to 2500 rpm. And i still want the good low end tourque i'm used to with the stockl cams. What do you guys suggest?

I have read a lot of good things about the vt cams too. You should look at their stage 1 cams if you are interested in those comps. You should also go to www.modulardepot.com. They have a lot of good stuff about cams there.

I just dropped off my 2002 GT at Dallas Mustang and there about to install my FoxLake Stage 2 Heads and Comp Cam's (XE270AH)and BBK Shorty Equal-Length Headers, and Dyno Tune it while it's there. If your not getting Ported Heads then i would suggest the (XE262AH) Comp Cam's. The reason i went with those cam's that i got, everybody iv'e talked to loved them and Dallas Mustang Suggested them also. They said they got the best results out of them. I should be pushing around 315-330 RWHP from doing this setup on my car. Plus i have a lot of bolton's on my GT anyways. Let me see how my cars going to do and everything and i'll let you know man. K
Mods: 1.TrickFlow Intake
2.70mm T-Body
3.Densecharger CAI
4.Pro-M 85mm MassAir
5.Steeda Underdrive Pulleys
6.3.73 Gears(about to switch to 4.10's)
7.MAC FlowPath Muffers
8.Pypes X-Pipe
9.180 Degree Thermostate
10.BBK Shorty Equal-Length Headers
11.FoxLake Stage 2 Heads
12.Comp Cam's (XE270AH)
13.Predator Programmer/Dyno Tuned
14.Pro 5.0 Shifter
15.Ebiach 2" Lowering Springs
(Just a Few Things on the GT as of right now)

Hate to break it to you, but you will be lucky to see 290 RWHP with those mods. I got stage 2 heads and comp XE278's, and only put down 297 RWHP. If I had a cold air kit, and pulleys, maybe 5 more hp. Just dont believe what all the shops tell ya. I know I dont.

I would reccomend XE 262, or VT stage 1.

would it be good to go w/ the VT stage 2 n/a's over the stage 1's? what would be the benefit (or consequence) if you went with those.

Definitely check out the VT stage 1's. I have them in my daily driven 01 and the car runs great. I talked to VT about the stage 1's and 2's before the install and they mentioned that the stage 2's would probably be a little to aggressive for a daily driven car. Either way I gained 33rwhp and 13rwtq with the Stage 1's. The car has a nice lope and not too much "engine shake" at idle.

Been thinking about cams too. Are they someting that you should wait to do later or do sooner as far as go mods? And do you have to have anything else done to the stock engine to run a different cam safely?

Cams are one of the best mods to do to these motors. It made a big difference to my slow NPI car. Install took only roughly 2 hrs with an extra set of hands and the Anderson Cam tool.

What would i be looking at as afar as price of install? I want to change the springs also so i don't have any problem. Did you have the car tuned after?

I would reccomend XE 262, or VT stage 1.

houston performance 302 stroker(forged)
patriot stage-2 heads
comp XE-278 cams
SCT tune (T+J Performance)
C+L plenum, 75mm TB
MSD coils, 92mm Pro-M
24LB injectors
BBk equal length headers
O/R X-pipe, 2-chamber flows
centerforce clutch/Alum fly
3:73 gears
Eibach pro-kit
Aeromotive fuel kit

My setup

- Stock 5k mile, 281ci shortblock
- Stock heads
- Comp Cams XE270AH
- Comp springs
- Accufab 75mm TB
- C&L upper plenum
- Steeda CAI
- Mac long tubes
- Trubendz O/R X
- Magnaflow catback piping w/ Spin Tech Sportsmans
- Steeda U/D pullies

The car put down 290hp/301tq last spring.

I would seriously take a look at your engine or tune. Something is not right to have 21 extra cubic inches, fairly radical cams compared to mine, and ported heads and make 7hp more. You shouldn't be anywhere under 315 or so.

You will definitely have to have the car tuned...I had the car dyno tuned using a Superchips...can't remember the exact figure of the install because I had a few other things done...valve covers and the price of the chip as well as the charge for the dyno tune...definitely expect to pay more if you plan on doing the springs...just a cam install with springs I would imagine would run you somewhere around $700...my cams cost around 600 as well.

Yeah, I contribute the low numbers to the cams. When I dynod the car, I heard a ticking noise from the valvetrain. I measured the base circle on the cams, and it was way off. I sent the cams back to comp for a replacement set. Hopefully when I get them installed, numbers will be a little higher.
