H&R Springs coil-bound

Hi all, fairly new to the forum, although I've been lurking awhile. Just got a 2000 GT - kind of a project car. I was replacing a broken wheel stud in the back and noticed that the rear springs are coil-bound at the top. I know this isn't right and was probably why it rode like crap. P.O. said that they are H&R springs, and the color kind of confirms it. I have no idea how long they have been on. My question is, if anybody has pic of their H&R spring install (both front and rear) so I can compare. I'm not interested in body height pics before and after, just the springs with the suspension loaded normally. Thanks in advance!

holy crap those things are shot...did the p.o. take that car off sweet jumps?

i dont have any installed pictures but those shouldnt be that wound up. if you look at the pic below you will see they are closely wound but shouldnt ever be touching

I just recently installed mine and although they're tight up top there aren't that many coils touching. With the rust those things look like they were sitting in a lake or something.

Most cars in this area are rusty like this - nothing unusual. What could have happened to cause the springs to sag like this, beside go off some "sweet jumps"???

Is the jackstand underneath the rear axle? Well if you're jacking the car up the springs will seem coil bound???

Yes, the jack stands are under the axle, which is exactly the same loading as if it were sitting on the tires - actually slightly less, because of the angle created and transferring some weight to the front. I decided to check the fronts as well - here are the pics:

This is FULLY EXTENDED (jack stands under the unibody)!

This is normally loaded:

Check out what I found - OEM strut with 125k miles!! Dust boot missing and jounce bumper trashed.

At least the driver's side was was still intact:
