hard clutch still

i just got done putting in a centerforce stage II clutch in my car and my pedal is still stiff. but i had to really adjust the cable alot more than normal to get it to go in to gear. will a stretched cable be my problem with a stiff pedal? i have a stock cable with mm quadrant and firewall adjuster. i do have an old aftermarket cable at home so i am going to have to try it. i think the cable has stretch on me. when i first bought the kit from mm it was smooth then over time it became hard. i just thought it was the hd motorsport clutch so i replaced that. boy i hope i didn't just buy a new ch and it turn out to be a stretched cable. anyone have any thoughts?

The HD Motorsports clutch is a heavy clutch. A Centerforce 2 is supposed to be the same as stock (but I haven't tested that one...yet). The only thing a cable could do to cause the clutch to be stiff would be to get frozen in the cable sheath. Stretch, adjustment or anything won't cause it.

Personally, in applications running less than 500 lb/ft of torque, I prefer the King Cobra clutch. Very soft, softer than stock and holds considerably more power.

I do think a stretched cable can bind. there is resistance in the sheath from the broken strands and those can bind.

How did your bearing retainer look when you had the trans out? when they are chewed up, a hard pedal often results (as well as notchy take-up, sometimes).

Running a Centerforce dual friction pressure plate here as well (same as Centerforce 2) and it is WAY softer and smoother than my King Cobra was. Extremely happy with it. Sounds like you need to put some lube in that cable (get some cable lube) or it is binding somewhere (check your routing). If this isn't the case, your bearing retainer could be the problem, clutch fork is bent or the ball where the throwout bearing is messed up if you didn't replace these while you were in there.

I'm running the Centerforce Stage II and the pedal isn't hard at all. My buddies King Cobra clutch felt way harder. I replaced the bearing retainer, and pivot stud when i did the swap.

I bought a new cable to solve my hard pedal pressure. I have a CF Stage II as well.

www.buyfordraing.com sells them for $40 bucks.

Make sure it is routed properly...and I didn't lube my new cable up by the way.

everything looked fine when i had it appart. i may have time tonite to change the cable and see if that helps or not. i don't think i have it routed wrong. down buy the oil pan and motor mount. thanks

i had the centerforce II also and i hated it. The pedal was so stiff I stretched one cable and broke another, i also went through 3 trans because the centerforce caused me to throw 2nd gear snycros. When i had it I peplaced everything but the clutch and couldnt get rid of the hard pedal. I have been running the stock clutch for the past year and it hasnt given me any problems at all and the pedal was alot softer

If you search posts by

V8 Only

you should find a post or two of his with pics of the correct routing. Having it routed correctly makes a huge difference, as does having proper alignment from the quadrant to the firewall.

You also have a g-force and the correct power output for a clutch like that.

I bet something else was the matter...the CF have a light pedal (very close to stock like). I have had 4 different clutches...(stock being one of them)...they are very similar. Something was wrong or was done wrong during the install of the CF.

I see a lot of guys replace their clutches for a stiff pedal. Don't feel bad, we've all done it, certainly me including.

FYI guys, don't lube the cable, they are teflon lined. Lubing them will trap grit in them and ruin them.

I'd be sure it's routed like the pic below (thanks for the mention hissin!) If it is, try getting a new clutch cable from mm or buyfordracing.com

The CF Stage II is not hard at all. Like I said before, my buddies King Cobra was way harder than the CF clutch. I love the feel of the CF

got it fixed. i took off the stock cable and put on a bbk cable i had before. now i have to relearn how to drive the car. i have never had a pedal this smooth and easy. thanks guys for all the suggestions

I think BBK's cables are a pretty top notch cable because mine has also never let me down. I'm glad to see it was only the cable and not your clutch. Break that clutch in before hammering on it! Good luck
