i was wondering if this is all stangs or just mine. when i try to put it in reverse(5 speed tranny), it seems really hard, and i have to force it into reverse pretty hard. sometime this even happens in first gear...does this happen to anyone else? it must be bad to force it into gear, right?

I sometimes get a recalcitrant reverse as well. Usually letting out the clutch, putting it back in and then trying again does the trick though...

I have had this from time to time. This seems to happen on most 5-speeds and not just stangs. I have noticed this on past cars (my Integra, my talon) and current cars (my Stang and my truck).
My fix that seems to work each time is not to force it into the gear that won't go, I doubt it's good for the tranny. If it won't go into 1st I put it into one of the middle gears (like second for example if you are trying to go to 1st) for just a moment. This seems to unlock 1st then. For reverse I just slip it fully into another gear that is close by like 5th. Do this for just a moment also and then slide it into Reverse.

I think it just depends on where you stop the tranny. It seems like it gets stuck between gears or something and it just takes some other gear movement to get it unstuck.

yup I get it too, I do everything Brisk281GT said

I always find if I gently put it in reverse, like let it pop in by itself rather then jam it, it goes in more often then not.

I thought that even reverse was synchronised on the tremec tranny's, I never had a problem getting into reverse...
...OTH, talk to me about shifting between 1st and 2nd...

Reverse is a PITA for me. Putting it in 5th first then shifting into reverse works most of the time. If it doesn't, I roll forward a little then it goes in.

What I do is to very slightly let out the clutch with a tad bit of gas while I am putting the 1st or reverse gear in the gate. It goes in like butta.

Nothing is worse than sitting at a light and then the stupid car won't go into 1st when the light changes. It just kinda gets you by surprise.

Me to I have to go from fifth to reverse. To get it in if that does not work then I let out the clutch then try again and it works most of the time!
