A year ago, i bought a Pioneer Harmonic Balancer.

It was beautiful unit with a nickel-plated looking finish.

Now... 1 year later... The finish is all but gone! It looks like it's peeling off. The shine is gone and it looks like bare metal now.

The engine still performs as expected and no problems with vibration or timing but cosmetically, the balancer looks like it's rotting away.

Is this is normal wear and tear?

I had a Romac balancer that was beautiful out of the box and continued looking that way until I changed motors. These balancers are in a spot where they get the elements big time. If it's just cosmetics I wouldn't worry about it. If the numbers are going away take a paint marker and mark you lines so when you want to set the timing it's visible.

On the new motor it's a PPI balancer. I wasn't a fan but it's held up just fine.

Pioneer has since switched to a black coating on many of their balancers, however the older once I use to wax or WD40 regularly to keep them looking fresh. Romac use to make a alum hub version as well... You can sand it down or scuff it up and paint it with no harm....

I picked up the trickflow balancer because it was black , SFI rated, pretty much everything else is TF on my engine, and the price was right We'll see how it runs.
