Harmonic Balancer instal

My HB is finally going. Ordered an non-sfi Pioneer one and I'm gonna pick it up and put it on tomorrow.

My question is should I replace the oil seal even though mine's not leaking?

Also, I bought a puller set, but I didn't see an HB installer. What does one look like and how does it work? I looked at my Haynes and they don't mention an installer.

Yea to install mine i put a soft block of wood on the balancer and used a rubber mallet to tap it on slowly to where i could begin the thread... i started threading it and it pushed on nicely

I changed out my balancer today, I put antiseeze on the shaft and put the balancer in the oven for 15 minutes at 200* and it slid right on with no hammering required. You will have to remove the fan and overflow bottle to have room to put the puller onto the balancer. Start to finish is about an hour or two on this job.

you should always replaced the front crank seal whenever the hb is removed.

installer is the bolt that holds it in. most guys with the pioneer don't have to heat it up.

Ben is right about the seal. The old one might not really have leaked but can be vulcanized enough to eat into the new balancer's snout.

That said, the seal scares me. It's made of stronger metal than the timing cover.

Do get yourself the install tool (IMHO). Some parts stores rent out a 30 dollar removal kit but others have the two in one kit (it was an 80 dollar loaner for me).

If you use the bolt to pull the hb on down the crank snout ..............

D O N' T do it ... if you can't catch 2 or 3 rounds of threads

The last thing you wanna do is hose up your crank snout threads

HB install...

Autozone rents an HB remover/installer that is easy to use. Chilton's and several posts I have seen said NOT to hammer on the HB at all. I replaced the seal and used antisieze on the keyway of the HB when I reinstalled mine.

I took the coolant reservoir out, and the fan, and took it off, then tapped it on with a rubber mallet until I have like 1/4 inch of threads then worked it on with a ratchet them impacted it, then torqued it.

It's a loan (deposit really), not rent. You let them charge your CC the cost of the tool and when you're done you get a refund. Net cost is nada.

The tool is much nicer than the 15 dollar POS most parts stores give ya. And it works for removal and installation. If I have to drive to a store and loan out a tool, I might as well use a decent one.
