Harmonic Balancer

Well my old one took a dump. Rubber pulled out and you can move the entire thing by hand.

2 of the bolts were finger tight...

I have a few questions.

1. Which Ford balancer do I need? They make a few 50oz ones...

2. Should the balancer bolts be Black Oxide Steel? B/C mine are silver in color and are hex bolts.

My bolts were black - looks like someone lost the oem bolts when they installed U/D's (and perhaps had to use allen head bolts). Then they tossed some crap on there when they reverted back to stock pulleys.

Not sure on the Ford balancer. For the budget minded, a Pioneer (3021 is non-SFI IIRC) or PP unit is how I would go.

I gotta say...................... that I am not a fan of fluid dampers on street cars (I might use one on a serious track car that spools like a mofo). That is just me...............

If you get a quality elastomeric unit (rubber like stock, but NOT stock), it should hold up great. If wanting Pioneer, the non-SFI unit is often a ways under 100 bucks and available at some parts stores you guys have around the nation.

The Pioneer SFI is a nice piece and is 180 ish.

PP units are about 80 bucks (non SFI) and double that or so for SFI.

Not speaking of the above items, since I feel that they are all decent. But note that SFI does not necessarily mean it is of better quality.

Just curious, why dont you like the fluid filled dampeners?

The fluid dampers can produce some funky characteristics. A lot of builders dont like using them and some motors will not be warrantied if one is used.

I would have to research it on a physics level to figure out why. Once I got that far, I pulled back and dismissed them as an option without researching further.

Fastsnake, that unit reportedly does very well - a lot of guys like them. I have to say that for the money, a Pioneer SFI unit should be the same price. I would use the Pioneer personally. But that PP unit (I mentioned it earlier) should work fine.

Anyone know what size the balancer bolt is?
I tried a 7/8th" and its too small.

I think the crank bolt is 15/16".

Also, I would use a balancer install and removal tool, which can be rented from the parts store. I used a kit that had both that was 'loaned' from CSK.

The problem with the fluid types is that they can go bad easily if the fluid leaks out, even a little fluid, and it makes it worse than no balancer at all. The elastomer (sp) is kind of like an advanced rubber. I noticed the difference in smoothness when I did a Romac SFI 50oz.
