Hey guys. I've got a 69 Mustang Mach One with a 377 stroker with air conditioning(added eventually). I have a Chevy one wire alternator. It belongs to any vehicle from 1973 to 1987. It has two red wires coming out of the battery stud of the alternator-one says alternator output and a small gauge red wire(16 gauge) and it has two prong connection below it one says "S" and the other "I". Do any of you have any idea why there would be two red wires coming out? Please let me know?

Try a google search. I researched the Chebie alternator swap into a Ford and found some interesting stuff. I will be doing this in the near future, I hope.

Yep. One goes to the battery, larger wire. And the other is for ignition to turn the alt. "on". The other is just for a voltage gauge used by the factory. I just jumped the two smaller together and ran it to the ign. wire.

I've got one, ran a 4 ga. wire to the solenoid and thats it nothing else to hook up. It's self exciting so it turns on when you rev to 1500 rpm.

I was just wondering why the "one wire" Chevy alternator has three wires and why theyd call it "one wire"???

On mine I only have 1-wire hooked up, the other 2 aren't hooked to anything and it works great. You'd have to ask a Cheby guy were the other 2 wires go on a GM.
