The hatchback on my 88 gt wont close right. YOu have to slam it down and then even with it in the "closed" position, there is like half an inch or two of play up and down. Its like the hatch lock thingy is bad or something. I figured a new one would fix the prbolem. Anyone else agree?

yeah it's probably the striker. Oddly enough I just tightened up mine today. To tighten it up you can either use a torx bit (T20 I *think* but I could easily be wrong). Or you can use a pair of vice-grips and just turn it. Also you might need to replace the plastic part on it. You can get new plastic for it at almost any parts store. The striker moves up,down, left and right. Your hatch probably wont bounce around after you fix it up.

Its definately the striker ( a plastic sleeve that goes around the bolt) has deteriorated over the years. 50resto has them. I wont use the hatch because I have to get one myself

You sure its not just the supports on the corners of the hatch? My striker plastic is wearing too but I adjusted the supports and it tightened it all right up.

I've seen it be just the plastic piece. Ghetto method : tape the old one up with electric tape.

is was more of a "functional wing" rather then a hathc. It would just lift up at speeds above 70mph!!!!!!!!!!

For any easy fix I would say just tape it up with electrical tape like what Ourobos suggested. This is what I did and it is perfect.
