Have Problem !! Timing Cover Replacement !

Hi, I have a 2001 GT. Have to change the timing cover, but having problem getting vavle covers off. passenger side - problem with the train filler tube mounting bolt - any tricks to getting to it??
Driver's side - do I have to remove the brake booster to get the darn thing off?
All being done on the ground - no lift !
any tips or tricks shared would be greatly appreciated!

They will all come off inside of the engine bay. Be prepared to curse and cut up your arms/hands but the covers will come out. Get all of the bolts loose first then you will have to raise them/angle them to clear obstacles. It is possible but isn't the most fun. Worst case you do NOT need to fully remove them to get the timing cover off but it is best so you can clean them and reapply silicone to the 4 needed spots for reinstalling.

Train filler tube?? WTF is that? If you cant handle taking the cam covers off, you may way to take it some place to get the work done. Its maybe a 20 minute job.

Thank you, and I got them off and back on with all new Delphi gaskets, yes there was a lot of cussing and a few scrapes a couple tools got thrown across the yard but should be all put back together complete and running tomorrow! And no I did not have to pay an over priced mechanic to the job and inevitably break something else in the process. Thanks for your help.

If you can't understand The sometimes auto correct takes over and read between the lines , you shouldn't reply with attitude. I Was changing the time in cover on a 4.6 sohc motor. And yes it is done complete and correctly. And it IS NOT a 20 minute jod.

Damn auto correct, should say fel pro gaskets.

If you are competent with tools and have mechanical abilities it is. I just replaced my passenger side cam cover gasket, took 5 minutes.....If you cant handle working on cam covers, you shouldnt be working on your engine.

Im still wondering what you mean by "train filler tube"....Take it to a shop. Truth hurts bro.

Wow, really!
If your so competent at working on this engine and you see that I replaced the timing cover, which means one must remove the valve/cam covers, then you should therefore know that I was speaking about the transmission filler tube, for short the trani filler tube !
BTW, I am a girl!

I gotta say, if we all only did work that we were absolutely comfortable with doing, then none of us would have ever gained any mechanical ability at all and shops would love us because we'd be there all the time. Sometimes you need to get stuck, feel like you're over your head, then figure things out, and develop those critical thinking skills. At least EllyGT did the right thing and resourced a forum for help. I personally have done just about everything that can be done on these cars. And I've never been hesitant to ask questions if I felt lost or stuck. We all learn, and most of that learning is done while you're standing there with grease all over yourself scratching your head and thinking "WTF do I do next" or "WTF, how am I supposed to do that" or "WTF, what did I just get myself in to"...lol!! My first DIY was a cai and that overwhelmed me. From there I've swapped out intake manifolds at 3am, changed water pumps on the side of a road, swapped out spark plugs and fuel injectors in a parking lot, changed an AC compressor at a gas station, built and disassembled engines, etc. Take it to a shop? Why? I can figure it out on my own and save the money for more stuff, lol!!

The job is done, correctly too! Didn't have to pay a fortune for labor just to have something else broke in the process. The last mechanic put a small tear in the leather of the driver seat and put 2 gouges in the window tint of the passenger door. That is why I will learn and do what ever need be to do it myself. My husband is teaching me. But not all mechanics are that way, I just can't find one that's not. This was the 1st time we ever changed a timing cover on a mustang! Thanks to those that gave advice. This is my 1st mustang I've owned, Christmas present . Now we're are changing and upgrading the suspension, my husband is getting me lowering springs for my birthday! Then gonna get new exhaust ( SLP loudmouth ), gonna be awesome! Can't wait for the mechanic stuff to be done cause then he is gonna paint her for me!

Glad you're learning. It helps if you have a garage with a compressor, air tools, and power tools. Yea I don't trust mechanics that much either. There are very few I would take my car to around here. And good job on getting this particular project accomplished. If you REAALLY wanna learn, then go get a cheap junkyard engine, take it apart, and put it back together. Its a lot of fun trust me, lol!! Seriously, I'm about to start an engine build and I can't wait.

Thanks for the great idea of the junk engine. As soon as I can I will do that. Yes we have a garage, air compressor, air tools, power tools, but can't do mechanical work in the garage cause the husband paints cars in there, can't do both in the same space, contamination! The husband has built a a Few engines in life just not a ford. The one thing we really want to have is a lift, that would make life so much better! But in time!

Remind me why these fourums are here? This is the kind of answer I would expect to see on the Corral, but never from StangNET. I guess if everyone was super efficient at working on cars as you are then no one would post.
