Have you ever heard of these gears??

heres a little input directly from the foxbody technical reference and performance handbook. 2.26:1 gearsets were installed in some model year 1980,1981,and 1983 mustangs. and the lowest gearsets put in foxbody stangs from the factory were 3.27:1 available in 1983 and 1986-1993. so i think you need to take your rear cover off and see what you got. if its a ford gearset then the ratio will be stamped in the end of the pinion gear.

FoxFan is at it again.. 2.3's didnt come with 3.73's..... unless its a Thunderbird turbocoupe....

Most later 2.3L foxs had 3.73s, especially if they came with an auto. Most earlier ones did not. My pacecar had a 2.3 in it originaly and came with 3.45 gears.


If you want to know the gear ratio just open the cover and count the teeth. The gears could probably use some new oil anyway, or look at the code on the door tag. You'll be looking for some kind of letter or number under the heading AX on the bottom right of the tag. Post what you see and I or someone else can decode it.

Well I decided to pull the diff. cover and find out what the gears really are, so I counted 41 ring teeth and 15 pinion teeth so when you do the math it comes out to be 2.73:1 which is way off from what I thought, and im actually glad, I can live with 2.73's until I get my 8.8 and 4.10's

If your cover has never been taken off before then there should have been a tag on one of the bolts stating the gears in the rearend and what size rearend it it. Also your door tag will say what gears you have.
