Header wraping

Ok, so yeah, yesterday i spent the time consuming task of wrapping my headers with this heat wrap stuff that i ordered off of summit. I didnt realize how hard it was going to be till i started lol. i mean some of the places in there are really really tight, i also looked like i was black when i was done. But anyways, i am going to stop rambling, but what i was wonderin was how much this stuff is going to help/cool. On the package it says it reduces underhood temeratures by 70 degrees, but that sounds kinda steep. But i think it wil help with starter lag correct? I have long tube headers and my starter dies when the car is really hot, but yeah, any information on this stuf would be appreciated..Thanks..

Header wrap works pretty good at reducing under hood temp ( not sure if its actually 70 degrees or not, but that is probably true) so good that it will cause you headers to rust out prematurely, if you overlap the wrap more than a 1/4 inch. If you did overlap them more than that, then i recommend that you take it all off and do it again. That is the only way to not get hot spots on the headers, and your pipes will last alot longer.

Header wrap is dangerous stuff. If you wrapped the both headers entirely then you might be in for some problems. It holds the heat in and I have seen headers burn clean through the metal at sharp bends where they were wrapped and this happened rather quickly I might add. I do not like the stuff at all except maybe to wrap a short length where something else might get burned. Use it at your own risk.

I agree, the down side outways any benefits and starters are alot less expensive than a good set of headers. I would personally first look at buying or fabbing some type of heat shield for your starter or installing a mini one as opposed to trying to eliminate the source of heat.

Ditto to what pakrat said, a heat shield for your starter would have been more practicle. Ive heard some bad stories about wrapping headers. For daily driven cars they are not recommended. But if your car is a weekend warrior/track driven car then you should be ok....
