Is a flowmaster cat back system a direct bolt on to long tube headers or do you still need an xpipe or h pipe

No, im not persoanlly familiar with flowmaster, but every exhaust system has 3 pieces. You have headers, various sizes, a mid-pipe, and a cat back. Cat backs are always the same size, its the headers and mid pipe that can vary.

but you could have staight pipes which are just headers and exhuast pipes

exactly what he said. the cat-back has to mate up to the back of the mid pipe so the headers will have no effect on the cat-back. and pretty much every H or X pipe on the market will bolt up to a cat-back
