Headers Idea

Ok, so i have an idea on longtube headers, tell me if you think it might work. What if you have equal length tubes, but half way it swirls so when it reaches the collector, it blows out the exhaust in a more high flow form. I dont know if its been made yet, but ive never seen it. but anyways, do you think it would give you more hp or torque or anything?

first of all i love your picture, truely a piece of art.

Its an ok Idea, but swirling that pipe will make the collector area too large, especially if your car is lowered, my long tubes have tons of road rash and there tucked up there as close as they can get.

I dont think the swrill would do anything uless you didnt have mufflers, b/c the muffler is what is chaning the flow direction of the exhaust. But its good to see your thinking outside the box

Just kidding of course. I don't think it would help in the least anyway, since the collector is going to merge all of the exhaust pulses, regardless of how the primary tubes swirled around each other.
 
So your trying to create a venturi effect with the headers? :shrug:

International trucks is actually using something like this on thier new HD diesel engines with all the new emission rules being put into place, except its farther down in the exhaust after the muffler or something, supposedly its going to cool down the exhaust as its coming out.

direct injection headers are the way of the future.


not to say this isnt possible, but the swirling would most likely promote turbulence, which would in turn slow down your exhaust and serve to choke the motor. what you would need is the have swirls on the inside of the exhaust pipes to keep the venturi effect going before it loses momentum and crashes. kind of like how a rifle barrel makes a bullet spin.
for someone to fab on a amateur/muffler shop level this is not really within the realms of possiblity.
on a much larger scale with some serious research and development behind it, it has every chance of working and being successful

Just because the pipes are twisted around each other doesn't mean the gas coming out of them is going to follow that same path...also it would be impossible to twist them up that much unless they're like 1 inch pipes.
 
lol yeah i under stand what you guys are saying, but eh, it was a quick idea that popped into head during class. but yeah, later during the day i was thinking its only good with straight pipe and the collector really would be big. so i guess it wont happen unless they can omehow put it to use on a drag car.
 
Something about this thread reminds me of that Tornado intake insert thing you see on late night infomercials..

The thing you wanna do is equalize the exhaust pulses...you don't have a perfect flowing stream of gases in each pipe, you have pulses. They're super fast but the key to make more power from headers is to equalize these pulses so they don't work against each other and create back pressure in the pipes. This is why full lengths are superior to shorties.

Another thing is header design. The length of each primary and the degree of each bend in it make a big difference. I talked to a local guy who built a custom header for a 2.3 turbo engine, and each pipe was the same length and the bends were within something like 15% the same degree at each bend...honestly it was a little beyond my understanding but the idea is that each pipe has the exact same flow/restriction and meet at the collector at the right time.
