Heads and Edelbrock Intake

I recently bought an Edelbrock Performer Intake and I was thinking since I am going to have the motor apart already it would be easier to buy and install heads now and then just have to worry about the supporting parts down the line. I was thinking about going with these heads because I am on a budget.

Now can I run around on the stock TB, MAM, Injectors, Cam until I raise the money to get those parts. I think it will be easier to get heads out of the way then worry about $200 here or there.

What kind of numbers would I be looking at and does someone have a similar set-up?

Also if all this is possible what other parts will I need for the install besides gaskets. I already asked a similar question to this in a different post but I want to be crystal clear on everything before I make an expensive purchase like this. Thanks!

the stock cam will limit you I would say if everything is is really stout you are looking at 280 MAX rwhp with the stock cam NA..there have been people who did better but I think for most people 280 is pretty generous with the stock cam..
 
But the car will still run fine with that set-up and the stock cam, right? That's what I'm mostly concerned about. I want my car to be capable of mid to low 13s so I think 280rwhp would get me there with good driving.
 
302FordRacer~Did you run your car because I'm contemplating the Intake and Gears with the other supporting parts like you have or getting the heads then the other parts eventually. I want to see what parts similar to your set-up is capable of netting me. Thanks.

Over the cast iron GT40 heads you were looking at yes the Y303s are better.
For another $400-$500 you can step up to the AFR, TrickFlow, or Edlebrock heads. But, for $400-$500 you can get a cam, pushrods, lifters, and maybe roller rockers to go with the Y303.
 
Yeah that's what I was thinking about buying the other stuff with the money saved. But, are the other heads worth that much more money. Basically, how much better do the other heads flow and create horsepower than the Y303 Heads?

Look at the comparison chart with the different types of cylinder heads in the link. Are they worth that much more money? Yes they are. That's why they cost more. Can you reach your goals with the Y303s? Yes, if you get the right cam to go with the Edlebrock intake and these heads as well as supporting hardware down the line later like you planned.
 
definatly do the cam at the same time even if you have to drive like a grandma until you get injectors, fuel pump, etc.

also your going to want hardened pushrods with the new heads and roller rockers as well. get the stud mount!!

and if you don't mind waiting get some afr's, edelbrock, or trick flow. they are worth the extra money.

oh yeah, almost forgot I would be amazed if you make over 260 with the stock cam, or 280 with those heads.
 
I guess I'll just do the gears and intake now. I'll save up for the heads, cam and other supporting parts over the summer working.

I was also thinking that since my car has 112,000 miles on it is it wise to put all this money into it. I was thinking maybe doing the gears and intake and getting some spray. If worse comes to worse and something breaks I can do a real nice N/A set-up then after a rebuilt motor.

What do you guys think?

Just a few thoughts...I looked at those heads too.

The bad thing about those heads is that they have a 64cc combustion chamber, if you don't get them milled your compression ratio isn't going to be that great. Alot of aftermarket heads for stock blocks have smaller cc chambers (like AFR's 58cc chamber) to increase the compression ratio.

If you look around sometimes you can get a set of Trick Flow twisted wedge heads for ~$930. They'll be better then the Y's for a stock block 302, and there are companies that can hog them out to 310cfm on the intake later down the road if you go with a bigger engine or power adder.

I did heads and cam at over 150,000 miles, but my engine wasn't using any oil and compression test was good.
 
My car still runs strong but I haven't done a compression or a leak test on it. I'm still undecided about what to do because I figure if I'm doing the intake I might as well do heads at the same time not have to open the motor twice and get new gaskets and stuff.

How much money should I have for Heads, Cam and all the supporting mods if I do the install myself?
 
Thats hard to say, it depends on what you're buying. You can get an intake really cheap on E-bay if you're patient. If you look on the racers sites you can get a set of heads for a good deal, then worry about the camshaft. Do you want to stay with the stock short block for awhile?

I only ask because my friend got a H/C/I package, spent alot of money on it. Then he went with a 331 stroker and had all that redone.
