Speaking of which, the cops also have new radar systems that are not detected by any of the commercially available radar/laser detectors. My room mate got nailed by one a few days ago.

Yah, there are a few now. There is also a 2005 silver Mustang GT that is an unmarked police car on the east side of Portland.

speaking of the law. now they use decoy's to catch speeders. semi truck pulled over on the rightside of hwy. driver is at rear of vehicle acting like checking his load. truck driver actually undercover with radar gun. hidden behind on the other side of the big trailer is 3-4 patrols waiting to take off at a moments notice. well executed plan. and also they're pretending to be bums begging for change by the on/off ramps. those bums have radar guns and radio contact to patrols hidden a few seconds away!! SUCKS

I've seen some sneaky undercover cars before. Where I used to live there was a Camaro SS that would egg people on in races and then go after them. That seemed questionable to me, but my street racing and reckless driving days are over, so it never affected me.

I don't think I buy that -- sounds a little "far-fetched" to me. If they were really concerned with detectability, they'd just outlaw them like in a couple other places. Since there are only a couple places that outlaw them, doesn't seem like there would be much calling for it.

I used to occasionally see cops shooting radar from dump trucks (construction trucks) pulled off on the shoulders of highways. I think they stopped because of having to have a truck out of work costing too much. I wonder if the police seized a semi in a drug raid or something, so they have free use of it now or something. The on/off ramp bum idea sounds really sneaky!

I've seen this on TV, hard to see in person.

They do it in Everett, but mainly just decoys to cite drivers for not yielding to pedestrians on crosswalks, etc. Purposely sending out plain clothed officers into traffic as a marked unit is around the corner ready to pull out.

From what I understand, there was supposedly a supreme court ruling preventing the government from outlawing radar/lazer detectors, based upon the fact that because the waves are broadcast out into the public, citizens have the right to detect them. I am not sure which court this ruling came out of, but it seems as though it was from this state. In other words, outlawing radar/lazer detectors doesn't seem to be an option in oregon.
Anyway, the Eugene cop that pulled my room mate over had a lengthy discussion about this new technology. Because my room mate is a mechanic, the cop had a few questions he wanted to bounce off someone knowledgeable. The cop said that the new radar guns replaced all the EPD department lazer systems, as well as old radar systems that were circulating in some of the department squad cars. The new radar supposedly sends short, concentrated pulses, which differ from the old systems. Apparently, this is why current retail detectors do not yet detect them. This is just another example of the ongoing technology war. The cop actually shot my friend's detector from point blank range to demonstrate the point. I promptly threw my 5 year old cobra radar detector away.
I'm sure there will be new commercially available radar detectors any day. Though, it sounds to me like with these new radar systems, by the time your system detects it, you have probably already been clocked (just like with current lazer systems).

That whole bum thing? I see bums on the exit to Kitsap Way ALL the time. There's 3 or 4 of them that frequent there. Maybe they're undercover?

It's certainly possible -- I just think it would have been a huge waste of money, unless there are statistics that show radar detectors are a huge problem, and I also think it would have been all over the news, especially this weekend with the Police out in full force.

speaking of decoys, up here in Renton, WA area a friend of mine was the bunny for the HP a few weeks ago.. Got to race people in his STi, and then they would both be pulled over. Of course the STi driver didnt get a ticket tho.

Kind of an underhanded police move, but what ya gonna do..

I have to aggree with this post. I have crossed a few radar points here in Cali, my valentine did not pick them up. I went back to the spot and held my unit, hehe, in front of the radar and it barely picked it up. I have also crossed shasta quite a few times and have not picked up the radar there.

honestly i wouldint rely on a laser det i use my own eye sight and i still dont have any speeding tickets then again im usually only speeding in day light hours and pay very close attention to my surroudings.and if your going 5mph faster then every one else you usually dont get pulled over even if every one is going 70 in a 60,many times ive gone past a cop at 75mph in a 50mph zone with a laser hitting me and to date still no ticket (begining of 520 by uw).any who the staters are becoming sneaky little basterds
