So I have my new engine in my 82 and got it running Sat. Had to work at filling the cooling system, but it still seemed hot. To set up for the engine dyno, I just ran a hose between the intake outlet and the water pump inlet. Shop owner said it was not cooling until he blocked off those fittings.
So Sunday, I pulled the heater hose off the intake fitting and clamped a short pc of smaller hose inside it.

Seems to have made a difference.

Anyone else had this, or better cooling with the restrictor in place? (The 82 is non ac heater only car, you can change the core in 20 minutes)

The way you did it is the way people have done it for years....without the bit if hose inside. The restrictor is for the heater core. They found that the heater core restricted flow so much it would build up pressure and fail prematurely. The restrictor would be on the inlet side of the core to restrict flow before it reached the core.

Maybe there was an air bubble causing your issue.
