heater ?

I have a 88 tbird, the temp run about half way on the gauge but when i turn on the heat it climbs higher. does anyone know anthing about this

Do you have an aftermarket temperature gauge or just the stock gauge on the dash? Turning on the heat would only change the location of the door around the heater core.
