I'm building my 5.0 for the cobra and I'm looking at the Pertronix HEI style distributor. It also states that it will not work with roller cams. If I just change out to a bronze gear, won't that solve the problem?

Has anyone else used this? About my only two options are pertronix or davisunifiedignition.com (DUI).

Last I checked, HEI was a GM thing. I've never seen a Ford with a HEI distibutor, or a Chrysler for that matter. I looked at the PerTronix site and they only list them for Chevy, Olds, and Buick.

Hydraulic roller cams need a steel gear, not bronze. Have you considered a Mallory or MSD distributor? Unless you'll have a beastly engine on your hands, I would just use a rebuilt stock one and put the distibutor $$$ toward an ignition box.

right, it is mainly a GM thing, but there are aftermarket companies reproducing them to keep the distributor and coil all in one. I think it would make for a much cleaner engine bay. Plus, it would look hella nice.

With all of the books/articles/word of mouth that I have gotten, the bronze gear is the only one that won't get chewed up by a roller cam gear.........dunno

DUI has a part# for a 302 with a factory roller cam

STREET/STRIP
38820
Ford 302 Factory Roller Cam
$389.00

Our Ford D.U.I. (Davis Unified Ignition) is the only one-piece ignition system for Fords. This is a simple, drop-in unit. The coil is inside the cap and the module is inside the distributor. Just run one 12volt wire to the distributor and you're ready to run! There is also an optional tach hook-up. The D.U.I. eliminates ALL of the messy wiring found on stock Ford electronic ignition systems. This really cleans up your engine compartment.

The Ford D.U.I. is available in either the Street/Strip version (up to 7,000 rpm's) or the Racing version (up to 9,000 rpm's). Both units will allow you to run a whopping .055" spark plug gap, providing a more powerful explosion of the fuel mixture. Our DynaModule is designed with more dwell time producing a hotter spark. No ballast resistor is used. Stock Ford systems, and many aftermarket systems require a ballast resistor which reduces the voltage in the ignition system. Our D.U.I. allows FULL voltage into the ignition system, giving you a better spark and more power.

Every D.U.I. is curved on a distributor machine based on the specs of your Ford motor. A super smooth curve will eliminate engine damaging detonation and provide instant throttle response.

The Ford D.U.I. is a real work of craftsmanship. Although it is uniquely designed, replacement parts are easy to find. High Energy Ignition (H.E.I.) replacement parts will fit right on the D.U.I. The unit is polished and lubed as it is assembled.

Built for durability, the D.U.I. has an upper and lower bushing, unlike stock Ford distributors with only one bushing

You could run a MSD pro billet ready to run

http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=MSD-8352&view=2047

That only costs $235 but you need a blaster II coil and a roller compatible distributor gear. http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=MSD-8583

That type of dist does not need the MSD box, it has a module built in. You can still run it with the box, and you have a backup module in case of failure.

Why not go crank fire ignition instead of going for a HEI setup?
