HEI distributor

I'm building my 5.0 for the cobra and I'm looking at the Pertronix HEI style distributor. It also states that it will not work with roller cams. If I just change out to a bronze gear, won't that solve the problem?

Has anyone else used this? About my only two options are pertronix or davisunifiedignition.com (DUI).
 
Last I checked, HEI was a GM thing. I've never seen a Ford with a HEI distibutor, or a Chrysler for that matter. I looked at the PerTronix site and they only list them for Chevy, Olds, and Buick.

Hydraulic roller cams need a steel gear, not bronze. Have you considered a Mallory or MSD distributor? Unless you'll have a beastly engine on your hands, I would just use a rebuilt stock one and put the distibutor $$$ toward an ignition box.
 
right, it is mainly a GM thing, but there are aftermarket companies reproducing them to keep the distributor and coil all in one. I think it would make for a much cleaner engine bay. Plus, it would look hella nice.

With all of the books/articles/word of mouth that I have gotten, the bronze gear is the only one that won't get chewed up by a roller cam gear.........dunno

That type of dist does not need the MSD box, it has a module built in. You can still run it with the box, and you have a backup module in case of failure.
