Help a n00b change a thermostat

I'm assuming that it is located on the water pump where the upper rad hose meets it. anything i should know when changing it?

yeah dont put it in backwards you will know if its backwards when u start the car!

use some rad hose clamps so you dont loose almost all your fluid and make a mess your also gonna need that little paper gasket that seal the water nect you could also use some rtv. other wise it is easy as all hell.

There is a little circle thing on the one side that faces out make sure it is at the top.

I've also had the ploblem of keeping the thermostat centered during installation (which causes leaks). 2 tiny drops of superglue on a properly positioned thermostat will keep it from moving around you while you put it back together (make sure you don't put the glue anywhere where it will interfere with the gasket or diaphram).

I use the blue cord from a set of earplugs. Loop it through the thermostat and hold it tight through the top of the waterneck. Now the thermostat is centered and you know it's not going to slip. After you have the waterneck snugged up, release an end of the cord and pull it on out. Fishing line, shoelaces, nylon string also work well. If you use the string, you'll always have the thermostat pointing in the right direction (Just in case you ever forget that the sensor needs to sit in the water that's getting all the heat)

Thanks guys, all done. Took me about 45 min- 1hr and saved $100

just one thing: i saw when i took the old thermostat out that there was a little blue rtc on the inner side, well i put a very thin coat of rtv on the inside of the new thermostat and stuck it in the housing, it stayed so i didn't have to use that string method. i also used a very thin layer of that blue rtv on both sides of the gasket, i hope thats ok. Didn;t know if it was one or the other, so i used both. took it for a 20 minutes spin and the temp is staying down.

What about boot-laces, they aren't exactly the same as shoelaces? is a bit of clothesline ok?
