Alright guys, I need some advice. I have a 91LX with an AODE with 120k on it. It is going bad, slipping gears and what not. Should I just have it rebuilt and add a shiftkit, or should I maybe just buy a new aftermarket AOD? If so what shiftkit or aftermarket tranny is best? I only need something that can handle 300-325 HP.

Thank You!

well it depends on how you want it to perform.........if you have 2000 bucks or so you could really build a beast or get a LENTECH aod.
if you dont have the money or wanna go nutts with it, have it rebuilt with a transgo shift kit installed ( about 100 for the kit ) and have heavy duty bands installed. theres a wider heavier over drive band youd want installed, and basically they make some hi po parts kits that the re builder can use or that you can buy and give them. if you want a noticeble difference in acceleration maybe an after market lock up stall converter as well. all depends on what you want, but at a minimum youd want it rebuilt with heavier bands and the transgo shift kit and that would work pretty well if you take care of it and arent putting to much power into it. the real cost is all labor ( having the shop remove and install it )......

You are gonna hear this a lot, but: I would do a T5 swap instead. It's cheaper, your car will be faster, it can be more fun, more economical, and you get to work out the calf and leg muscles on your left leg to boot. If money is no object, then swap in a TKO, T56, or other bullet proof tranny. You can do it yourself in you garage too. I have heard of complete swaps costing 400.00, but mine came out to about 1100.00, which included a new flywheel, clutch, pilot bearing, 5.0 shifter, knob, Redline MTL, and other incidentals...

Have you considered a C4? That is the auto I would choose if I were to do an auto, but I wouldn't go "auto". I would do a strong rebuild kit and a manual valvebody, 3000 lockup converter, rachet shifter, and a transbreak, then I might need a neckbrace.

Get it rebuilt, use a lentech valve body or a trans-go shift kit. Buy the "taxi/police" sprag so you can have 2 more direct drive clutches. Get a nice little stall converter, and you will be happy. There is no way a t5 swap is cheaper, and if you did use a t5, with the hp you have, you will destroy it, you'd need a better trans. After you rebuild the aod, get the biggest baddast trans cooler money can buy, and you'll be happy.

It all depends on how it is used, and amount of highway use. I have a full built AOD in my Bird, but now see it does not see much highway use. If doing it again, would of used a lighter, smaller, more efficient, cheaper C4.

Get it rebuilt! Go to a transhop that has a good Rep. ( ask around) tell them you want to go with a Trans Go or Fairbanks shift kit, rubber molded accumulator, kevlar bands and a late model Third gear drum with the "ratchting sprag" (trannny lingo) and to go with a Dacco Performance stall torgue convertor (this convertor will save you hundreds) email me direct and I"ll let you know what it should cost! I have Been building BULLET PROOF AOD for years. You might want consider yor gear ratio plans! Aod have a crazy gear ratio. (that's what makes a stk auto 5.0 seem slow) A stk t-5 is not the way to go!
I'm with 90mustangGt. I have a c-4 in my 93 347 fox ( but it's not my daily drive).
