So I just started running the engine again today. It has only been about 3 days since I last mucked with it. If anyone remembers, the last time I ran it, just before I cleaned all the spark plugs off because it was missing so bad. Half the plugs had gas on them. After I cleaned them off, it ran "ok".. All cylinders were firing but the exhaust was popping a lot with small backfires. Today, I start it up and it's totally running worse than previous. It's missing on at least 4 cylinders or at least partially firing on those. I did my little trick where I slowly pull the missing cylinders wire off the dist, just enough to leave a big gap and here a click click click . Doing this at fast idle usually burns the crap off the plugs and gets it running better again. I did this, and it sounded better. But hell, I could not get it to clear up all the way. Well, it would clear up, but then shortly after I put the wire fully back on to the dist, it would start missing on that cylinder again. the exhaust is so bad that it was smoking up the whole neighborhood. The house smells like it, and I had to change clothes just because I smelled so bad.
Why is it running so damn rich? And why do the plugs keep fouling up within a matter of a couple days? I can't even get it to run normal. Timing is set at 14 deg. vac lines are capped. couldn't even drive it because it smoked up the car so bad. Oh yeah, and I have one other problem. The back brakes are not releasing fully. I adjusted the brake shoe dials on each side just enough to make it a bit difficult to get the drums on. I thought you were supposed to do this, then put the car in reverse .. move and then hit the brakes a few times so it would self adjust. I did this, but I have not heard any clicking noises coming from either side. I think they are still at the same adjustment because the car slows down too fast and when I checked the drums when I got back, they were starting to get pretty hot. I was only going about 20 MPH and not hardly touching the brakes. What did I do wrong?
