Help fuel pump question?

Ok today i went to replace my fuel with a carter performance street pump its a block pump anyways the stock one has three lines the new one has only 2 ...the new one doesnt have a return line im guessing thats the vent one....What can i do can i use the new pump and plug the return line what will happen any help would be great thanks.....

Ok i still didnt find out if it oks to disconnect the return line does anyone know if its ok?

Been There. Done That.

You have the right idea about how to handle your quandry. Simply hook up the in and out lines on your Carter (in fact that's the same pump I chose) and then block off the return line from the tank. Apparently, the third line had a few intended purposes. First, it was meant to keep the fuel and the pump cooler in the long run, by looping it between the pump and the tank. Second, it was intended to pressurize the tank to keep it in compliance with EPA rules. There was a third rationale for use that was to effectively act as a pressure relief / stabilizer for the system. That's what I read in the manual, at least.

All that said, I've been running my Carter pump in the manner described for 5 years now, with no adverse effects noticed. Go for it!

Thanks i did....I think the pump is rated for 6 psi and i have an edelbrock carb on there now...do you think that is too much pressure? should i regulate it...I still smell gas and the car is hard starting when warm actually it started bad this morning too when cold like it was flooded? and i have this weird stumble at all speeds in all gears if you just cruise if you get on it hard it isnt there thats because what every the problem is its getting coverded by stepping on it harder....

pumps don't always put out what they are rated for. 6psi is the absolute max for an edelbrock. They recommend 5.5 and I recommend 5 for good measure. I say you should set up a regulator and a fuel pressure gauge. I had hard starting and fuel smell when warm when I was running too much pressure with my edelbrock, but no stumbling or anything. You can check your spark plugs to see if they are really black. If they are then you are consuming too much fuel, likely from the fuel pressure, and then your spark plugs are probably fouled.

Thanks for the info I have an carter fuel pump 6-6.5 psi at 120 gph block pump...and i have an edelbrock 1406 carb i pulled the plugs yesterday and there pure white...i guess its running a little lean...plus the timing is set at 0 degress its at top dead center so im guessing that not good either? so i bought an 1806 edelbrock 650 cfm thunder series carb i hope this helps..... with the lean condition....i heard the 1406 runs very lean.....probably not a good choice for the 5.0
