OK I took apart the T-5 because the speedo did not work (Could not feel the gear in tranny)The yellow gear is just spinning on the output shaft,I get a retainer clip from a tranny shop put the clip on ,put yellow gear on,slide rubber collar on.Speedo still does not work! Yes I put a drill on the cable the speedo works.Am I missing something else ? is there a certain way the gear goes on the output shaft? Any tranny guys in here I coul use some help! :bang:

i have the same damn problem too mine will jump around once in a long time i cant figure it out i did the same you did. my be there is a chip in the gear. the way i figure it im buying a new trans :nice:

It has been a while since I have rebuilt my t-5. My best advice is to write to D&D and tell them of your problem, perhaps they can best advise you in your situation. Also, did your speedo just stop working one day, or has the car always been like this?

Reason why I ask is because there are two different style speedo gears, one for an AOD and one for the T-5. Just a thought. I am speaking about the gear that goes onto the cable, and also the color yellow gear means that you need the proper speedo cable gear to coincide with that part. But this all adds up to if the car has always had no speedo, or if one day it just stopped working.

That clip has to lock into the detent on the output shaft.

Yup, the clip slides in a hole on the output shaft and the gear slides on top of it and it locks it in place.

Look through the hole in the side of the trans. The speed gear should be dead center in the hole.

Since you have a yellow speedo gear, that means you should be using a red 21-tooth driven gear on the speedo cable.

Question, is the speedo driven gear locked on the cable with the tab?

The yellow gear is a little towards the rear of the hole I have it on as far as it will go.So you say I need a red cable gear ? I have a white on now,is the red gear a different size than the white one? And the speedo does work ,I put a drill on it to check.

I have a T-5 in front of my right now. The speedo drive gear should be dead center in the whole. No offset at all.

There should be a small raised nub on the output shaft. I have a broken output shaft here and the nub is is 9 3/8" from the end of the output shaft to the center of the nub where the pilot hole is for the speedo gear.

If your's is installed right and sitting towards the rear, i'm starting to think you have a GM T-5 output shaft in your car. The output shaft and tailhousing is longer on the GM cars to move the shifter back a few inches. Has your t-5 been rebuilt previously??

1990 should have a 8 tooth drive gear. A yellow gear is a 7-tooth drive gear. That is not stock for your car. Had you had the stock 8-tooth drive gear, the white 23-tooth driven gear would be the correct one.

That makes me beleive the tranny in your car is not the original. The yellow 7-tooth gear came on the 275 ft-lb 85.5 - 89 T-5 tranny. It's actually better to have the yellow gear. It allows you to run the red 21-tooth gear which does not strip like the white one.

Anyway, to recap, with 3.73's, and a yellow 7-tooth drive gear, you want a RED 21-tooth speedo gear
