Help Installing Fiberglass Cowl Scoop On Stock Hood..

So i bought this 3.5" cowl induction scoop off ebay for around 100 bucks, and dont really want it cracking around the edges after a year or two..i dont mind using fiberglass layers to mold it into the hood, and some bondo to finish it up, but what is the best way to mount it where the two meet?? i suppose resin might work but might crack eventually..right? thanks for qny help its much appreciated and a step by step explanation would be like christmas for me, lol.. also my friend had the idea of drilling a buncha small holes and putting some stainless allen head bolts through the scoop/hood with stainless nuts on the bottom to hold it down, i dont like that idea because of the obvious edge it would leave around the scoop...i was thinking the bolts and molding it with shreads of fiberglass/resin, or some bondo instead.whuddya think?

Well this might not be what you've got in mind but here's what i plan on doing....


Eventually my car is going to get a Holly roots style supercharger (carbed) and i'm going to run the classic butterfly snorkel breather through the hood. I don't like the idea of it constantly being open to the elements because i get caught in the rain a lot when i'm out, so i want some way to go from full hood to open breather, so i'm going to get a cowl similar to what you've got but instead of glassing it on permanantly, i'm going to use hood pins (not the typical loop/pin kind, but the flush kind that you see on the big dog's racecars that hold the whole front end on). That way i can pull the scoop off and put it in my trunk and go out, and if it rains or if i just want to hide the scoop, i can stick the cowl on and go.

good idea, i hope the scoop you buy has room for those quarter-turn fasteners on the sides...my buddy has that butterfly 3-hole type scoop on his chevy C-10 pickup, he doesn't run a hood for now and only drives it on nice days, luckily its summer because this NW weather SUCKS! and BTW nice car, did oyu put that front end on an 85? i have an 82 GT with the same everything on the front from the fog lights in the stock body kit to the hood scoop, i am using a different hood for this cowl also, good luck and if yours is flat black do you have any close ups?? within a month or two i plan on spraying my car flat black, i just wasnt sure if i can paint the front end or not without it cracking when i bump the curb..

I believe Summit and/or Jeggs sell the scoops with enough lip on the sides to put the fasteners on. The only problem is that i don't know if a cowl is going to be enough rise to clear it...i may have to get a scoop kinda like the stock GT scoop only taller. As for the primer...it's not perfect but it was better than the car being 2 colors. It's rattle can spray paint style, but it turned out really good for being so cheap. It's faded now and is started to look like crap....needs to get redone or painted soon. It doesn't chip or flake unless the paint underneath does, as long as you get the sandable primer then it's pretty flexible.

The nose came from a parts car that a guy sold me....it was put together (the parts car) from a wrecked '82 GT and a wrecked '79 Cobra, so there's a mix of parts on it. I gave a measly 200 bucks for the whole car, and i've seen these noses on eBay for $450, and the car had a roller motor and lots of other stuff...i actually profitted off of it.

There should be enough lip around that cowl to put the fasteners on.

there should be, here's the ebay ad where i bought mine, i can take a pic of just the scoop when it gets here for ya...i'm really liking your car man, it's a LOT like mine, if there anything valuable that you took off and re-sold?? i was wondering how much that air cleaner setup would go for on ebay with everything from the aluminum cover to the hoses inside the fenders..it still says 5.0 H.O. on it..nice wheels too they look good with that flat black/gray, what color is that??im not feeling so good so ttyl

I'm not sure how you would glass it to the stock hood without it looking rough around the edges but i'm sure it can be done. It might be a lot of work and hastle...might be better off with just a fiberglass hood if you want it to look smooth and perfect like a fiberglass hood would look.

I don't know if that's the going price for those noses, but sometime before i found the parts car i bought, i was doing regular searches for them and there was a particularly nice one for 450 and it sold. It did have the Cat foglight covers on it which are pretty hard to find, but otherwise it was just like mine. I wouldn't advise selling it if you like it...they're getting damn hard to come by...i'm almost paranoid about driving mine for fear of hitting something.

Oh yeah, thanks for the compliments! I wish the money would come faster for me to finish it...it's been 3 years and running since i got it...it's come a long way but it's still a long road ahead.

i wasn't talking about selling the nose off mine, hah the stang would seriousely hate me forever, i meant selling the stock air cleaner setup, if i can get much for it on ebay..and while i couldent sleep i was wondering if you could just turn your butterfly setup around, not much water should get in that way, but any water in your engine is bad..so thats a bad idea, anyway did you measure that massiave burnout in your sig.? i did one and held the brakes harder for 110ft, well i let off the brakes at about 80 but you get the idea, i had to test out how much better the 4bbl was over the stock 2bbl..haha but then the axle hop(slapper bars SUCK) caught up with me and i shattered the spider gears...if you ever get a chance put in quad shocks if you dont already have em, definately worth the work!
