Help!!!. I have a 67 mustang fastback with 351w and am installing a tremec 5 speed 3550. I purchased a modern driveline crossmember. They claimed it keeps proper trans and engine angle because 67 up tunnels were larger than the 65/66 however now that I have this all in the car the fan hits the upper radiator hose about a 1/2 inch back from the radiator inlet and the engine looks to be tilted back to much I believe i may have trans tunnel surgery on my hands. as i dont really want to have my engine and trans sitting crooked. hoping some one out there has experience with this swap in paticular and can give me some info.

thanks,

chris

well yea i'd say you're a little tilted. reach up on the right (passenger side) of the tranny and check for clearence between the hump and the front shifter cover... I had to whack the hell out of my floor to get it to clear that... I used a darkhorse crossmember... I've beeh happy with it for the most part, it required a little tweaking to fit, but the car is almost 40... they are all gonna be different... is it possible you have the wrong motor mounts??

I have a Tremec 3550 in my '68 coupled to a 351W with TCP motor mounts. Although I am running an electric fan, the angle of the engine/transmission seems to be pretty normal. The tansmission crossmember isn't one of the new swap in nits, but rather an old unit that was modified. Don't know if any of that helps or not, other than to let you know the combo will work without a tunnel retrofit.

I have about 1 1/2" clearance between tunnel and trans. I jacked the trans up till it hit the tunnel and only had 1/8" between hose and fan. Motor mounts are from the previous engine a 302/c-4 and looked pretty new so i was going to use them until i could afford some good after market mounts. I had no clearance problems with the fan before is there a different mount i should be using with the 351. Hey Kelton, did you happen to compare the tcp mounts to the originals could they have possibly dropped the engine lower in the car?

thanks for the help

I was thinking if i could get the engine to drop 1/2 to 1" and raise the trans 1/2" this might get me close enough. Any one no of a mount that will drop the engine around an inch.

I am running into the same problem right now. The problem is that the top of the tremec's (in relation to the imput shaft) is much taller than the toploader. These are the options that i've found applicable...
1). A tech guy at darkhorseperformance said that there is a company that makes motor mounts to lower the motor. I can't do this because of the LT headers that i'm running.
2). Cut the tunnel and raise the tranny.
3). Shim the rear end to compensate for the angle.

I have a 351C in my 68 and i think that i'm goin to raise the tunnel. A coworker of mine has a 67 fastback w/ a 351W and a TKO w/ the tunnel cut/raised and it actually puts the shifter closer to you and has a much better feel than the toploader long reach shifter. All he did was slit the sides of the tunnel and then used the front part as a hinge while he raised the back.

Chris,

I'm not sure if the TCP mounts drop the engine any or not...I don't have the old ones to compare it to.

However, I can't imagine it is dropped much, I have a 9qt. Milodon oil pan and I have pretty good clearance with it.

Good luck!

My 68 FB has a 351 with a 3550 Tremec.
I shimmed up the rear trans on the mount about 1/4 inch--no issues with the tunnel, but I'm running electric fans.
